They're bilingual if not solely Catalan speakers who pay more into Spain than they get back unlike other regions that want independence. Historically they have virtually always opposed Spain's decisions (esp. civil war and franco) and did once exist as a big power in the Mediterranean that had owned chunks of Italy. The culture there is very distinct too, though the average Brit probably won't spot it on a costa holiday. So if you think places like Scotland or Quebec have it rough, you should check Cataluña out.
