AstraZeneca Banned In Canadas Largest Province

Canadas most populated Province Ontario has banned the administration of Astrazeneca in "an abundance of caution" over rare blood clots and the fact that "more than enough doses" of Pfizer and Moderna are coming in

 

Those who already received 1st shot but not second one may be looking at mixing shots

 

Edit: So its actually banned as a 1st shot so ppl who already got their first may still be able to get their second one

Tbh i think this is stupid. At least let ppl decide if they wanna refuse it or not

 

Atm only 40% of population is vaccinated and even tho pfizer and moderna supply continues to increase it will still be months before EVERYONE gets a shot

 

In the mean time covid will kill WAY more ppl than AstraZeneca by many orders of magnitude so it doesnt make sense to take away ppls option to get it if its available first

Not only is it a stupid, ignorant decision, it's a selfish decision.  This is the best vaccine that is made with the promise of no profit.  A dose is $3 comparied to about $18 for Pfizer.  

It's selfish because this kind banning gives weight to chatter and conspiracy and threatens use not just in Ontario but around the world and causes undue stress to people who have or will take it.  This totally screws over countries who can't afford to pay for Pfizer & Moderna.

Makes me furious.

Again ppl have a right to refuse it if they are THAT worried about those tiny odds. They didnt have to ban it

 

Id be less upset if covid cases were very low and most of the population vaccinated. But were not there yet, were not out of 3rd wave yet and ppl are still dying and ICUs strained

 

This is gonna do more harm than good. Its gonna prevent maybe 2 deaths while extending dozens dying a day by potentially weeks

Wasn't Canada leading the charts for the most procurement of vaccines, where they hoarded vaccines 4-5 times their overall population 

Hopefully the banned AstraZeneca ones can go to other countries now, who are in desperate need for them.

Like this is so stupid... its gonna prelong the pandemic here and ultimately result in hundreds of more deaths and waste doses other Countries cant have too

 

This literally will save like 2 or 3 lives while indirectly contributing to hundreds more deaths

 

I get theres a tiny risk but covid is a bigger risk. Ppl are aware of it, they can refuse to take it if they so choose if they dont wanna take that risk. They dont have to take away ppls options to take it

 

I hope they at least ship the left over doses to other Provinces in Canada and if not Canada then at least other Countries ASAP before they expire!!!!!!!

Yeah. Canada ordered the most per capita at 400M doses for a Country of 38M people or 10 doses a person

 

Since most shots are 2 doses that is equivalent to about 5 full doses per person

To be fair tho i serously doubt Canada will actually hoard 400M doses...

 

Rich Countries did this simply to have access to whatever vaccines became available first. There was no way to know which companies would develop a safe and working one first so more contracts increased the odds

 

Presumably once population is fully vaccinated the left over will be sent out not just wasted... or at least i sure as hell hope so

An 'abundance of caution' policy in relation to covid vaccines makes no sense to me. In its attempts to defeat covid, the world has proceeded pretty much without any caution at all. Businesses have closed, schools have closed, everyone's movement has been curtailed, all sorts of norms have been trampled into the dust and all sorts of damage has been done as a consequence of our efforts to defeat this disease, and rightly so, we did what we had to do. Now we're approaching the end game, and all of a sudden some people want to be cautious about the (tiny) possibility of one specific piece of collateral damage ?
