That's because Eminem didn't grow up in a Canadian suburb. He grew up in a predominantly black neighborhood and he respects the culture. The thing about cultural appropriation is that it's rooted in ignorance; not knowing the significance of what you are wearing, saying, or doing. Justin's hair or him wearing a durag wouldn't be (as much) a problem if it wasn't so blatantly a look he's trying on and treating like a costume. He can be over this phase tomorrow and act like it never happened, kind of like how Miley went from Bangerz to Younger Now and started talking down on hip-hop. Black people don't have that option. They can have "acceptable" hair styles, wear the same clothes as their white friends, speak as "properly" as ever and be the most whitewashed version of themselves and conform to white ideals in order to be tolerated, but they'll still be black. It's not something that washes away.

I'm not necessarily explaining this to you, but for the people in this thread that think this is no big deal. As I said before, all of this is connected. We live in a society built on white supremacy, so naturally it's going to inform pop culture. It's too deeply ingrained in us for it not to. So for anyone that thinks all the talk is a waste of energy, it really isn't if people are learning from it. It's the little things that create change. People can disagree all they want, but to not respect the discussions about these topics is where it veers into being outright racist.

Agree with everything.

Ok well this isn’t about those topics. This is a pop stars fan base website where people talk about POP CULTURE. This isn’t NBC news.

Why can't a gaga fan forum be about topics like this? Do you just want a forum that's yassing over gaga tweeting once a week or bloodpop teasing stuff? Besides, Justin Bieber using durags and locks as an accessory is a POP STAR influencing POP CULTURE by appropriating poc culture :)

So it's OK for some white people to wear it...? Interesting.

As long as them respect, understand the meaning behind the culture... Yes :huntyga:

And it would be my pleasure to see JB talk about this :huntyga:

If you can’t make the distinction between where Eminem grew up vs. where Justin Bieber grew up, and why it’s far more understandable that Eminem would be wearing a durag or involving himself in black culture – more importantly the difference in how they treat black culture, then there’s no discussion to be had.

Some members on this site need to grow the fu*k up. Not everything in life is black and white and calling someone a racist because of a disagreement regarding a durag is ridiculous. If you are getting so angry and upset over this than you obviously do not read the news much. People are dying from covid, Israel and Palestine are fighting, the economy sucks but no - you will decide to focus all your energy on Justin Bieber wearing a durag.

People should be allowed to wear whatever they want. End of story. Justin is not disrespecting durags by wearing them. It's not like he is making a mockery of it or stuffing it in his butt or anything.

What's up with the same users who continue to get outraged about people calling out Justin bieber's microaggressions. Telling people how theyre wasting their energy talking about celebrities, but so fervently show up to talk about the same story in every thread lmao. Only in a way where they police emotional reactions of POC, stating they should be placing their concern in doing other behaviors. And what are these people doing? They never answer that question in any of these threads. They better be fighting for change in the US, tangibly and actively, if they're gonna have the audacity to tell others how to feel about this and what to care/not care about, speak/not speak about

God, ew.

This kind of outrage is so stupid because people pretend that ANYONE outside of the 5 people going out of their way to find things to be outraged about care about these things. In other words NO ONE outside of those people (gay, straight, black, white etc etc) even know the history of what a durag is and only wear it as a piece of clothing INCLUDING BLACK PEOPLE. They wear it no different than baseball caps, socks, pants, undies etc. This ridiculous idea that people wear it as a show of respect to African slaves and Ethiopian kings is hilarious in its stupidity. Get a life.

Wow so many rude and ignorant people in this thread. Let's unpack this: locks and durags are used within the black community as protective stylings for their specific hair pattern. It's not just an "aesthetic" so when someone like Justin appropriates these things and makes it cool for white people to wear when many black people are punished for wearing natural hair in professional settings, then it comes off as tone deaf and problematic. Maybe in a perfect world we could all wear what we want and do what whatever, but in the society we live in today where minority cultures are stolen for profit and at the same time degraded, we cannot start that conversation. In the end, no, this does not matter but don't say we didn't warn you when Justin's hair starts falling out :trollga:

This thread is so interesting.

On the one hand, people are saying that people can wear whatever they want, and this is true. Justin can wear a durag independent of his background if he decides that he wants to at this juncture in his life, and he can also decide he's done with locks and the durag tomorrow and go back to his typically white boy looks, which he inevitably will. That is his privilege and he will use it.

People have an absolute right to feel he is merely posturing as something he is not, in a way that flaunts his privilege as opposed to reflecting his authentic self expression. People also have the right to say this is not a big deal to them and they don't care about this when other, bigger, things are going on. Both are valid. Neither side should police the others' feelings on this issue.
