UK Pubs Running Low on Beer After Underestimating Post-Lockdown Demand

Pubs are running low on certain beers after brewers underestimated the level of demand following the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Breweries are struggling to fulfil orders ahead of the bank holiday as groups of up to six people are now allowed to meet in beer gardens, the Financial Times reported.

Owners of pub chains have said they are working hard to secure supplies, particularly of craft beers and premium lagers, to meet the demand.

Some are said to be redirecting beer kegs to their busiest sites.

I just wonder how stupid these breweries are. They must of known people being locked up for months would not flock to pubs

I dont think they are "stupid"

 

Brewing doesnt happen overnight and the course of the pandemic has always been uncertain. There was no way to know for certain weeks and months ago after vaccinations that theyd work as well as hoped, or that variants wouldnt ruin plans to reopen etc

 

So many brewers may have been cautious to not go full out and spend money they dont have to scale up volume that could turn out to not be needed and then theyd end up with fiancing debt for nothing or at least deminished cash reserves (if they were a producer that didnt need to borrow to ramp up production)

 

Its easy to call then stupid but in my opinion I actually can understand the caution tbh

The demand is insane. Two of my restaraunts have sold more beer and wine in the past fortnight than they would do in 6 months. Can't keep up.

Bruh... these dates have changed unexpectedly so many times in so many countries. The entire course of the pandemic has been plagued with uncertainty

 

Its totally normal for businesses to have some reservations and not go full out on investments when theres a lot of uncertainty on the horizon

 

I think these business ppl who make a lot of money understand the stakes better than a user criticizing on GGD. They have their budgets, logistics, customers they have ties with etc... they certainly had their reasons to be cautious. I would do the same in their shoes

 

If it was 1 company that did this u might argue they were "stupid". The fact that the industry as a whole did this should tell u they had reasons to wanna be cautious and i dont blame them

It's not that simple unfortunately, buying stock is a massive investment and this industry has been stung multiple times before, I spent thousands upon thousands on stock and it still wasn't enough. 

The breweries are in the same boat. Hesitancy is a big factor. So many kegs have been wasted over the last year

Perhaps so. U can make legitimate criticism. But im just saying calling them stupid to me is a bit harsh. I dont think they were dumb or stupid, they were just cautious because of pandemic uncertainties

 

Obviously the caution turned out to be too much. But i think its understandable why it occured tbh. 

 

This is especially true if some producers were already hurting from pandemic and didnt wanna take a chance at more losses to pile up on top of that if things didnt go according to plan
