Spain’s first solar energy pavement installed

Barcelona city council has installed Spain’s first photovoltaic pavement as part of the city’s drive to become carbon neutral by 2050.

The 50 sq metres of non-slip solar panels, installed in a small park in the Glòries area of the city, will generate 7,560kWh a year, enough to supply three households. 

“If we’re going to reach a target of zero emissions, we’re going to have to think about supplying electricity to blocks of flats, but we’ll also have to think of using wind and solar parks outside the city,” Badia says. “But installations on the ground like this open up new possibilities, and not just for Barcelona.”

“What we need to focus on is green policies to create employment, specifically to install solar panels on 1m rooftops,” says Fernando Prieto, executive director of the independent think tank Sustainability Observatory. “This would take five years, generate enough electricity for 7.5 million people, create over 15,000 jobs and cut CO2 emissions by 4.2m tonnes.”

This is really cool. It's crazy how these kinda of tiles were just like thoughts and ideas when I was in Arch. School and now they are a thing of reality. We've also now got roof tiles and shingles that act as mini solar panels instead of having large solar panel that weren't cute to look at.

Now hopefully these pannels can increase in efficiency further in coming years so that their impact on earths warming/heat trapping on a net basis can be more negative

I mean... at least creates jobs... the more ppl can be helped with stimulus spending that actually builds something useful rather than just stimulus checks the better. Not to mention it helps planet

It just seems a bit of a vanity project to me. Getting people out spending is the better option than giving billions to projects that are unlikely to be successful.

But at least it helps environment and is an efficient way to use space in my opinion

 

But i cant comment too much about this anyway economically speaking. I dunno how expensive this is relative to regular solar pannels so i cant give an opinion if the cost relative to environmental benefits is worth it

I feel like referring to efforts like this as a vanity project trivializes the severity of climate change  I understand people need financial help, but the earth needs help for people and money to even exist so... Can't we focus on both?

I understand the need for action against climate change however, people should come above projects like this. For example, the Tories in the UK is pilling billions into more nuclear warheads
