Yes I agree with it, but I don't think it's cultural appropation :saladga: that's what I meant.

Discrimination is always wrong, that's not debatable.

but I personally think that anybody can do whatever THEY WANT TO DO WITH THEIR HAIR :madge:

POC: wears their own culture’s styles

Society: that’s ghetto, you’re allowed to get fired from your job and suspended from your school for doing that

Certain Privileged White People: *wears that same style but as an ~aesthetic~ costume*

Society: oh how cute they’re being different

until we stop this, then it will always be an issue.

I think that that’s a pretty big leap. There are many many cultures where dreadlocks are popular. Particularly in Native American origins, Australia, and parts of Greece. It’s not something that is specific to black culture.

But it’s associated WITH black culture because, in modern times, 99% of people view it as black culture. Kinda like how blonde hair and blue eyes are naturally found in a very small groups of POC, yet blonde hair and blue eyes are always associated with white people.

Until POC stop being literally suspended from schools/fired from their jobs/bullied and mocked for the same style that white people get away with, I think it’s fair to put said white people on blast. Especially when they’re people like JB who have made it known time and time again that they literally don’t give a F about said discrimination. This “outage” only brings to light said issues because whenever POC try to convey why it’s f*cked up that their own creations get sh*t on while white people can use it as an ~aesthetic~ for a little bit like if it were a f*cking costume, when it’s not a costume to begin with.

Your point is valid but you're putting the wrong people "on blast", that's all I'm saying.

Usher is black, Bieber is being accused of cultural appropriation.

Nothing. I guess nothing :billie:

Just cuz Usher is black doesn't mean Justin HAD to appropriate black culture...

You can have black friends, coworkers, mentors, etc...why would that excuse him?

That’s a fair POV. But how do you think this issue is best tackled, then?

POC are discriminated against for wearing dreads. That's horribly and ridiculously wrong and we should all be pissed off at anyone who fires a black employee, expels or assaults a black student, excludes a black athlete, etc just because that person wore a cultural hairstyle. 100% behind that. Laws need to be written, employers need to held accountable, schools need to have funding pulled by the proper sources, all that.

@ALGAYDO

It's a complicated issue stemming from literal centuries of racism. It's going to be a lot of work and take a lot of patience to fix it. But I can tell you part of the solution is not to rant about Justin Bieber online.

You're not getting what I'm saying. I'm saying that Usher (if they are still close) should have advised Justin not to do this and why. It's as simple as that.

You struggle with something your whole life. But then this privileged person comes and dons the very thing. And reduces the symbol of a very complicated issue to mere style or fashion. It's just dumb and insensitive.

Exactly why this matters. Exactly why ggdalians who have never lived that experience should take a seat rather than giving their gaslighty hottakes on why POC should stop being offended.

I agree. He should know better.

But he obviously doesn't so would we rather him do it and no one on his team advised him not to? Or we criticize him for doing it? Sounds like a lose-lose.

I appreciate your input, especially because you’re much more well-worded and patient than most of us on this forum, but you can’t blame us for being pissed off at instances when white privilege overtakes black struggles. Yeah, putting JB on blast won’t fix these issues in any way, but it’s a product of years of oppression and discrimination. Can’t blame us for being pissed off when a privileged white celebrity used POC aesthetics as a costume. That’s all imma say for this topic now cause it’s getting out of hand.
