Homeless American Are Finally Getting Their Vaccination

Homeless Americans who have been left off priority lists for coronavirus vaccinations — or even bumped aside as states shifted eligibility to older age groups — are finally getting their shots as vaccine supplies increase.

 

While the U.S. government has only incomplete data on infections among homeless people, it’s clear that crowded, unsanitary conditions at shelters and underlying poor health increase the danger of COVID-19 infections, severe complications and death.

 

COVID-19 outbreaks have been documented at homeless shelters in cities such as Boston, San Francisco and Seattle. Vaccinating in vulnerable areas will be a key to achieving herd immunity, the goal of building a barrier of protected people to stop uncontrolled spread.

Most of these programs are paused because J&J is paused, because when people have very little access to resources and transportation, one dose is best.

That being said, can confirm, once we got J&J in, the push to vaccinate the homeless was almost immediate. Now if only the FDA could make up their minds.

Presumably they could do similar outreach & visit hotspots and camps that the homeless frequent so that they wouldn't have to go anywhere for it, but yes one-shot is almost mandatory as they have almost no way to keep track of who has & hasn't got their shots. Homeless often loose everything they own, so a vaxx card is out of the question, and they will lie to health professionals with fake names/identifying information so there's no way to keep that record for them.
