“SCOTTISH independence would benefit England and the other UK nations, a leading historian has said.

Professor David Edgerton, a ­lecturer at King’s College London, told the European Conversations podcast that English politics are in the middle of a “profound crisis” and that a break-up of the UK is what the country needs.

Edgerton said that he believes all four nations of the UK would benefit from a “new democratic settlement” and that England needs to have a ­“crisis of authority” before it can move forward.”

As an American who wants to understand Scottish Independence better, the pros and cons, is there any issue in the U.S that’s similar enough to draw comparisons I could understand?

It’s all about self determination. At the moment, the UK is composed of 4 countries. We all send MPs down to the Westminster Government - 533 for England, Scotland 59, Wales 40 and NI 18. Essentially England has the monopoly when it comes to decision. Our voice is not heard at all. We have recently been pulled out of the EU despite Scotland voting to remain the EU - 62%. I personally feel Scotland would be better getting to decide our own future rather than having Governments we don’t elect and have chance to elect.

I’m guessing there’s a financial aspect to some Scottish people wanting to remain in the UK? I know some right wingers particularly don’t like the EU and that kind of reminds me of the anti-globalist conservatives here in the US lol

Yeah, they are some myths that Scotland is subsidied by the UK Government. Where as we have a massive abundance of natural resources that we would be able to thrive off of. It’s been proven time and time again that Scotland would thrive as an Indy country despite what the unionist media tells

The closest example possible is if Vermont or Maine wanted to leave the US (the UK) and join Canada (the EU).

Vermont would have a greater say in Canadian politics and government. It's largely democrat/left-voting like Canada and doesn't tend to identify with views you'd see further south in the States.

The flip side is that it would create a border between Vermont and the US, which would negatively affect the economy and trade, potentially making prices rise and restricting immediate growth and job opportunities. It would also lose access to its supply of funds from the US federal government.

I get the comparison but I do not think they’d be a hard border between Scotland and Rngland. They would maybe be passport checks. They are still the Common Travel Area within the UK which includes Ireland the islands.

I’m not even conservative but globalization is definitely bad. It has lead to tremendous pollution, bad trade policies, and poor working conditions around the globe. Americans have fewer job opportunities than before because of globalization and that’s why our wages have stagnated in real terms for over 40 years. I hate globalization.
