If it were an alien species, they would have to be centuries or thousands of years more advanced than us. I'm sure they have the capabilities to go undetected if they really wanted to. Another theory is that they are interdimensional. So instead of coming from another star system, they could be coming from another dimension that's bleeding into ours.
