A senior official from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has told an Italian daily it is “clear” that there is a link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and a rare form of blood clot but that the cause is still not known, Agence France-Presse is reporting from Rome.

“In my opinion, we can say it now, it is clear there is a link with the vaccine. But we still do not know what causes this reaction,” the EMA head of vaccines, Marco Cavaleri, told Italy’s Il Messaggero newspaper.

The official reportedly told the paper that Europe’s drug regulator would be making a statement on the issue “in the coming hours”.

Even if there is a link, it's still incredibly rare and doesn't justify a amount of panic that was spread. Many pills have higher frequencies of blood clots and they're still used regularly. Let's wait and see what they say either way.

Young people and women are particularly at risk

While this is bad It's also worth noting doctors have said it is very rare and if it happens it can be treated with some blood thinning medication.

That said, If you can, get one of the other vaccines instead. :huntyga:

I had it over a week ago...I'm still here :huntyga: but seriously don't be put off...COVID itself causes blood clots and I'd rather risk the very small chance of something happening than getting seriously ill with COVID.

Same but tbh why all people think if you get COVID you’ll get seriously ill it’s not true always

Hasn't this been a consistent problem throughout the pandemic? A large group saying "if you get it you die", another large group saying "its no worse than the flu", then a smaller group who correctly understand that it could go either way

Yeah but I am not saying it’s like the flu or if you catch it you’ll die...I had it and my symptoms were temperature during the first 3 days then they all went away (haven’t lost my taste or smell)

Personally I probably would get quite sick if I got it as I'm in a higher risk catergory but for a lot of people it is a very mild illness/some may not even have symptoms. The concern with COVID is "Long COVID" which is leaving a lot of people who beat it fairly quickly with longer term problems such as continuing shortness of breath, fatigue and headaches to name a few.

Research shows 1 in 600,000 people will experience the clots, the UK population is around 65 million meaning if every single person in the UK took the vaccine, only 108 people would get the clots.
