Freud 5,729
I hate that she wastes her artistry for promo ads. I hate that she wastes her creativity for them. I hate that she wastes Nick Knight. In 911 the LG Promo was cringe but acceptable, but I hate to admit, as a fan i move further away if she is doing this blantantly promo constantly. The theme of duality of Lady and Gaga is so amazing as a concept and was so wasted for a stupid commercial for a watch? And then she promotes unhealthy cookies in a pink package and that's it? And wants to reason it by throwing in the word "Kindness"? And after she's done she's promoting alcohol for the rich? But telling stuff like "I want my concerts tickets to be accesable for everyone" and "I don't want to sell myself, I don't wanna make fragrances" Gurl, I love you but beeing a stan is getting an aftertaste for me I don't like... So you're mad she's making money? 😅 You do realise that you don't have to pay attention or care about everything she does... Yet still be a fan? The entitlement of assuming that she owes you anything is remarkable, that her business dealings need your approval or to meet your moral code. She is a business woman. You need to understand that. You would be jumping for joy to see her walking down a NYC street dripping in jewels and the most expensive designer clothes yet you don't approve of her business deals to afford that lifestyle. Who do you think is gonna pay for a Gaga x Nick Knight collab? They could do it for a music video that y'all will watch twice and criticise and thrn move on to wanting "more". Everything is so disposable with stans these days. I guarantee if she had had a normal Chromatica rollout a lot of you would be OK.. Next? I for one am glad she is getting paid, and paid good. Gaga knows how up and down the music industry is. She knows how these brands only want what's hot at the moment. She is making the most of her star power after another career peak. She knows the 7.5m deals won't necessarily be around forever. Maybe look outside your stan bubble and see things from her perspective. It's a whole lot more fun to a be a fan when you view things from the perspective of her being a smart business woman whose artistry has put her in the position to be flooded with brand deals. She's worked her ass off. She has plans for the future that will cost money. She is responsible for paying many people's bills. If you think she's doing that based on Spotify stream revenue then please educate yourself. She would have no interest in your attempt at belittling her ambition and worth. The music is there. After that she doesn't you or me anything. Now imma go eat some Gaga oreo cookies with my tea! 😇

Ad campaigns pay her for her artistry though. There's a reason why some of her most elaborate visuals are tied to ad campaigns. Or even reasons why music videos have product tie ins whether minor product placement or something significant like being shot on iPhone. High caliber visuals don't come for free - so why not bring out your best when someone else is footing the bill?

I can understand where you're coming from as there have been a lot of paid sponsorships recently, but I think fans forget that she has literally been doing this the entirety of her career; it isn't anything new. From Polaroid, to all the ad spots in the Telephone video, her water PSA in exchange for using Hearst Castle, Doritos sponsoring her SXSW set, the Bud Light dive bar tour, alcohol companies sponsoring VIP sections at her tours, all the way up to the recent brand deals during the Chromatica era; she has consistently worked with brands to market herself and create her art. She's been incredibly business savvy and has always leveraged brand partnerships to achieve what she wants. Music videos are expensive, making albums is expensive, being responsible for dozens of employees' livelihoods is expensive; streaming doesn't make artists as much money, touring has been on hold for at least a year, she only gets a certain amount from the label as a budget and the rest is up to her - when you look at it from that point of view I think it starts to make more sense. As for whether she is wasting her artistry on these things, I'd actually argue the opposite. She gets to creative direct the project, use her own music and promote her album, work with her own team to make art she cares about and collects a multi-million dollar cheque for it. Let's not forget she also gets these companies to donate to her Foundation. Anyone would be a fool to turn opportunities like this down. They give her the freedom to make what she wants. I've said it before, but her keynote speak at SXSW a few years ago is well worth a re-watch. She talks about the state of the music industry and why brand deals are essential for artists in this day and age.

I understand, but I mean...the Telephone video is pretty in your face, arguably more so than a simple post on Instagram in terms of how the promo spots impact the art: they disrupt the video itself, but I can scroll past an Instagram post easily. I think a lot of it is also to do with the way we consume content nowadays: everything happens on social media. Personal life, promotional posts, ad campaigns, magazine covers, behind the scenes content etc. all get clumped together in one spot. Artists' entire promo plans are based around posts on Instagram and building hype on socials, but brand contracts also require social media posts as part of the deal. So maybe it's all happening in the same place now, but I'd argue that brand partnerships are not actually any more prevalent in her career than they always have been. And even if they are, I think there's a logical explanation for it as I expressed in my initial post. Would it be nice if ads were counter-balanced with more personal content? Sure, I would love that and it's a shame we don't get much of that anymore, although she has made her feelings about social media pretty clear, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that we don't. It's also unfortunate that a lot of what she had planned for Chromatica was spoiled, so we've also been in a drought of non-sponsored music content too. I get the frustration, but I just think when you step back and look at the big picture it makes sense, and it's tiresome seeing some fans be so dramatic about her deals when she's been working this way for more than a decade.
