Nycboy 1,054
At this point in her career, do you think Lady Gaga still likes being called Lady Gaga? Do you think she regrets defining herself with that pseudonym? Do you think her name has boxed her into certain expectations as an artist? Do you think she has considered changing it or going back to Stefanie? Is the name outdated given her current career? She came up with that name when she was a club performer in her 20s. She couldn’t be in a more different place today. The name “Lady Gaga” was a very integral part of her overall image when she burst onto the scene in 2008. She was robotic and otherworldly in her music and in her style, and she came along with a stage-name to match this style. Her name was part of her armor and mystique, which she has since deconstructed post-Joanne. The nickname itself almost feels like a relic of her first few eras once you consider how far she’s evolved since. Think about how she herself suggested that her fans drop the “Lady Gaga” name in lieu of Joanne during that era. (IMO, I agree that the name Lady Gaga just didn’t seem as fitting for that album). Her new ventures are way more serious. She’s acting more and more. The content of her music has become more personal. She no longer hides behind a “persona” or an “aura.” She speaks openly about who she is and her struggles as a human being. It seems to me like the only part of her old persona that remains is her name. And while I’d agree that artists evolve all the time while keeping their names the same, this just feels different to me. “Lady Gaga” isn’t her real name that she was born with; instead, it was a chosen name rooted in artistic expression and how she wanted to market herself as a singer before she achieved fame. Being that the name choice was a business & artistic choice, it just seems a little less relevant today since she herself has moved so far away from that image. Personally, from Joanne through today I still call her Gaga but I see her more as Stefanie. (also, I don’t think she would ever actually change the name since now her name has so much recognition.) Quartz 12,511
She always define what Lady Gaga is though. Lady Gaga five years ago is not the same Lady Gaga you imagine when you hear that name today. So no, the name evolves with the artist. Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

Zombiecat 16,413
wtf are with these 'should she change her name for movies' and this thread lol? Lady Gaga is her stage name, basically her public name, might as well be her government name as far as it comes to worldwide fans knowing about... a stage can be used for any type of entertainment and it's the name she's spent over 10 years building up! Like get used to it and move on https://linktr.ee/jamalholt
chromatic puzea 10,104
it's hard cause as fans we know that gaga will always be an enigma and she's always redefining what gaga means, but because her commercial peak was early on, i feel like the GP has her in a bubble i think though if anything that "bubble" they put her in just makes it even better when she shows the GP who she is for example, when most ppl think of lady gaga they think of that rah rah bitch but then they see her at the oscars or at the inauguration and are like oh damn she can sing hard to even fathom which parts you should believe
HuffsAhoy 7,433
She's an enigma. The name Lady Gaga takes on whatever persona/personality that she creates for the project she is focused on at that moment in time. Her stage name has become associated with quality and acclaim; and will forever be as such. You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love. Sneaky Oliver 22,013
No, Lady Gaga is the perfect amalgamation of the classic and regal (Lady) and the rebel and artsy (Gaga) which defines her perfectly. She’s not just a lady. And she’s not only Gaga-crazy. She stays right in the middle of the spectrum.
