Nawal El Saadawi has passed away

Pioneer Egyptian feminist activist, author, novelist, physician, and psychiatrist Nawal El Saadawi has passed away earlier today at age 89 following a health crisis.

 

The author is known for her pioneering work in feminist activism, as well as her novels and writings that challenged gender inequality and advocated for the rights of women. She is particularly known for opposing the practice of female genital mutilation.

Saadawi founded the Arab Women's Solidarity Association in 1982, thus creating the first legal and independent feminist group in Egypt. She spoke against patriarchy and capitalism, and saw both systems as intricately linked. Her work led to her incarceration in 1981, and while in jail, she used an eyebrow pencil and toilet paper to write her thoughts.  

Nawal El Saadawi's politics were nowhere near perfect, and later in her life she went on to support authoritarian systems and said many problematic things. However, her feminist work cannot be ignored and she remains a pioneer in that field, paving the way for militant activism in her country and the region as a whole. 

I have personally only read Woman At Point Zero by her, and it remains one of the most important novels I have ever read. I recommend it to everyone who is interested in feminist fiction.
