President Biden 5,898
folklore’s historic AOTY win is truly progress for getting alternative & the indie pop girls representation in the Grammys. After a Melodrama and NFR loss, I honestly had minimal expectations for folklore’s acclaim. But still hopeful, remembering Golden Hour recently won, I remained committed to a folklore victory. I think to a lot of people, folklore winning is a sign that other nominees like Lorde, HAIM, Lana, etc COULD win in the near future. Flawless 2,234
It's about Taylor Swift, not the genre itself. imo, of course. the scars on my mind are on replay.

People have been creating this "type" of music for a while but it's relevant because "country" star turned pop icon went in a different way with her latest album(s). alsemanche 93,646
But all the albums you mentioned, including folklore, are pure pop (except golden hour which is country)??? I don't see how they are paving the way for alt artists to be included? If they wanted alt albums in the aoty category, they could have nominated Fiona Apple's album instead of only giving her best alternative album. Folklore is neither alternative nor indie so I'm confused as to how it's progress. Not to mention that had it been released by someone other than Taylor then there would have been a good chance of it not winning (or even be nominated). It just doesn't make sense for TAYLOR to pave the way for alt artists when there are soo many alt artists who have already made and continue to make stunning records that go unnoticed. Jnick8 530
I blame covid. Now that I have your attention... This album stuck because it was a familiar voice with a comforting message. It was a brilliant move. But would not have worked as well in any other year.

Guest
I appreciate the sentiment, but this is absolutely not progress for getting alternative and the indie into main categories. Taylor Swift might have created an alternative sounding album, but she is not an alternative or indie artist.
vinster13 3,574
Progress? Please. Everyone knows after hours would have won if it wasn’t for the obvious snub. Grammys are worthless.
PawsUpJago 1,956
Conflating this massively overrated album with indie/alternative artists or even that area of the genre is a tad insulting. She's one of the most popular and successful female musicians presently, she can make whatever kind of music she wants at this point and would get some acclaim. The underside of this iceberg is absolutely mammoth and many of these women will never see this level of success in their entire careers. Like, awesome, she won but let's not try and make it mean more in a bigger picture way, this win was just about Taylor. And it certainly doesn't signal much in the way of progression of these already meaningless awards.

ChvVolk 2,303
I too agree Taylor won because it's Taylor and they probably didn't wanna piss her off like they did with the last 2 eras. When I think indie or alternative, I think: Bjork, Lykke Li, Emily Haines, Karen O, Caroline Polachek and others, who have been doing it well and better for years.
