But it's the same way in America.  It is very common for Americans to identify with the country of origin of their ancestors.  Americans are proud to be Americans, but are also proud of their ancestral identity.  An American may say "I'm Irish" even though their Irish ancestors arrived in America in 1750.  Still Irish, and of course, American.

I have a theory why Gaga said "I'm Italian" in nearly every interview during her first 2 or 3 years.  She is proud of her Italian ancestry, and because the word "German" is in her family name she didn't want some fans to assume she was of German descent.  Just a guess on my part.

Not really. There are many counties where the majority of people identify as American and overall there are many people who consider their identity to be American. It's also the fact that most Americans are a mix of English, Irish and German which kinda merged into a single identity hard to differentiate.

You can moreover see it in how people don't take Gaga saying she's Italian seriously because she was born and raised in America despre her family roots being Italian.

kinda shame. For someone mentioning it wherever they go, you'd imagine she goes there every year for a vacation at least. :haroon:

The sad thing is that she usually only tours in Milan and for one night only, even Lana Del Rey had more shows in Italy than her 🥲

She’s Italian-American but lots of people drop off the “-American” part when describing their ethnicity.

Like I’m Mexican-American (3rd gen just like Gaga ) but I have referred to myself as Mexican before. I have noticed this is more common with people who’s families have not been here for several generations, we feel more connected to our roots.

Exactly.

I have ancestry from many countries and am proud of them all.  I love to attend festivals.  At a Scottish festival I identify as a Scot, and at a Slovak festival I identify as a Slovak, etc for my other nationalities.  It adds richness to people's lives, rather than saying I'm American periodt.  Why be stodgy when you can enjoy the richness of diversity.

no one can convince me that is how the label decided.

Anyway she doesn't seem to travel much apart from tours. Maybe occassional Caribbean vacay now and then and that's it.

Of course people born in America are American, as well of those who became American citizens later.  But people do proudly identify with the nationalities of their ancestors.  By doing so, they're not denying the fact they're American.

On the lighter side, try telling an American named Patrick O'Malley he's not Irish, because his ancestors came to America generations ago.  Go ahead, try to tell him he's not Irish. :giggle:

Smother Em Eh

She’s Italian American. She was born and raised in America but is of Italian descent. Her and her Dad low key look like straight out of Italy. Gaga got her “Italian-ness” from her Dad!
