A new species of wētā – a giant flightless cricket that is endemic to New Zealand – has been named Hemiandrus jacinda for being Labour-party red in colour and “long-limbed”. Steven Trewick, a professor at Massey University and the scientist who named and formally described the insect, said it had struck him for “reflecting traits of the prime minister”. It was a “striking species”, he said, and he considered it beautiful. Trewick said it was remarkable that jacinda had evaded recognition until now, given that it had been found close to densely populated areas and that it was “not a small, cryptic beast but a hefty insect with flamboyant colouring”. Here they say it was found in densely populated areas and not that small... then there was the new glands they found in humans in back of throat last year I feel like "new" discoveries are actually often seen or found a bunch of times but the ppl who see it dont think to assume its new and think nothing of it Ppl probably saw the bug and be like "thats an interesting creature i dont know its name tho" Doctors doing scans and MRIs probably be like "theres a like that came out in this scan" or "hmmm i dont remeber that organ from medical school i must of been sleeping in this unit" Only when an expert thats actually paying attention notices it and reports it to find out if its actually new does it get officially registered.
