There are all kinds of different addicts.  She may or may not be the kind who can handle moderation of alcohol and there's really only one way to find out.

For a lot of people they either become alcoholics, or their success in managing the sustance in moderation tricks them into believing they can use other drugs in moderation too, or being drunk opens a window to bad decisions and if the opportunity arises, it can go bad.

But I agree it's probably worth finding out.  There's such  big differencing between "quitting" and "stopping/taking a break" and it's not that uncommon an addict of hard drugs is not going to be an addict with other substances.  

I think she knows enough now to know what she can handle, and how to seek help if she needs to.

If she’s got a good support network around her then she can make sure this is right. It’s a slippery slope though
