River 127,367
Further read: The Biden administration announced that it will not issue visas to diversity visa applicants from fiscal year 2017 to 2020, who were denied their visas under the Trump administration’s Muslim bans, which ultimately targeted a large number of Africans. President Biden, when he rescinded the Muslim ban, ordered a State Department report on how to address Trump’s rampant denials of immigrant visas, including diversity visas, under his discriminatory bans. Today’s announcement offers limited relief to a subset of people injured by the Muslim ban, but does not do anything for diversity visa applicants. Specifically, non-diversity visa applicants whose applications were refused on or after Jan. 20, 2020, due to Trump’s Muslim bans, may dispute their rejections without resubmitting their forms or further payment if the underlying visa petitions remain accurate. People who were denied prior to Jan. 20, 2020, can reapply, but will have to submit a new application and fee. https://www.aclu.org/press-releases/aclu-statement-bidens-refusal-address-diversity-visas?initms_aff=nat&initms_chan=soc&utm_medium=soc&initms=210309_muslimban_statement_tw&utm_source=tw&utm_campaign=muslimban&utm_content=210309_immigration_statement&ms_aff=nat&ms_chan=soc&ms=210309_muslimban_statement_tw I have a lot to say but will keep to myself, since I was hurt by the process of having a visa and I have a lot of anger So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy
ItWasntLaauv 6,392
I would love to see the people who think Biden can’t be critiqued try to brush this off.
Featured Comment MJHolland 12,725 Posted March 10, 2021 Featured Comment Share Posted March 10, 2021 Further reading that actually paints the full picture: "... One reason could be the law: The US State Department is limited to issuing 55,000 diversity visas a year, with a specific number set aside for various parts of the world. According to Reuters, Ned Price, a State Department spokesperson, on Monday said that the statute authorizing the program also requires applicants to demonstrate their qualifications within the same fiscal year they were chosen." https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-denies-entry-to-diversity-visa-applicants-banned-by-trump-2021-3 2 minutes ago, River said: Today’s announcement offers limited relief to a subset of people Idk how the ACLU can get away with using the word "subset" when in fact the visa application process was reopened/the Muslim ban was repealed in 99% of cases... It's not about brushing things off, it's about how you and others loooove to assume the worst intentions in Biden (which is cringey af btw). I'm almost certain that the White House/State Department counsel is advising Biden that their hands are tied legally because of the law the diversity visas program is authorized by (see post above). Like, we're legit 6 weeks into this presidency can y'all give the man another month or two to reverse the million horrific policies Trump put in place goddam. They don't have to "brush off" anything. There's more to the story, as is usually the case beyond reading a headline. That’s all. I didn't say you expected the worst, I'm saying y'all are assuming the worst intentions. Biden couldn't have been more clear how abhorrent and morally wrong the Muslim travel ban is, and I truly believe him when he says diversity is what makes this country great. I'm sure that lawyers are working to do the right thing here for these people in the diversity visa program, but y'all have to understand that this program was already of life support bc of Trump. Biden isn't a magical king who can wave a wand and make everything better. I'll wait to hear more before judging too harshly. 56 minutes ago, Gagaloo911 said: Biden getting worse day by day. He literally just delivered on his biggest campaign promise — MASSIVE covid relief stimulus. It's been SIX WEEKS and y'all are trying to burn him at the stake for not laying golden eggs I mean honestly In what world is caving on the $15 minimum wage, delivering only $1,400 instead of the promised $2,000 (no where was is said the $600 counted toward that in these promises, and the $600 happened under Trump BEFORE the promises made), giving LESS people the stimulus checks, and dropping the $400 unemployment plus-up to $300 at the last minute considered "delivering" on his biggest campaign promise? If you want to praise him for breaking promises left and right and think no one's going to care or see through it all, then have at it. The American people aren't going to have it though, and all this is only going to depress Democratic turnout in the future when they see they've failed yet again to deliver any meaningful or substantive change in people's lives. Which is going to require bold action like getting rid of the filibuster to pass critical legislation like voting rights, climate action, etc. which Biden and corporate Dems REFUSE to get behind, meaning NO bold action, meaning NO real change and leading to Dems losing their newfound power in the midterms I mean honestly we've been down this road before, like what happened under Obama seeing what happened in 2010 after he failed to deliver any real change, yet it's like some of you learned nothing from those mistakes and want to make them again now by playing silly politics and this "moderate, incremental" propaganda garbage that only ever leads to Democrats losing their power. The LAST thing I want is Republicans running this country into the ground again, but you don't prevent that by playing politics as usual and pretending as if caving and compromising on your biggest campaign issues is great and a massive success.
