Back To School: New York To Reopen High Schools On March 22 2021

New York City on March 22 will resume in-person learning for high schools, the last group of kids to return to classrooms in the largest public-school system in the U.S.

Elementary schools brought back students in December after the most recent district-wide shutdown, and middle schools did so in February. Mayor Bill de Blasio had said the city’s 282,000 high school students were the hardest to bring back for in-person learning.

Still, the reopening will only impact about 20% of New York’s high school students who signed up for in-person learning when given the choice last year. Families may be offered another chance to opt-in before the end of the academic year on June 25, but de Blasio said it was too early to make a decision on when because positivity levels and case numbers remain elevated. “We’re not going to do it until we are safe.”

Schools in Texas have been open since October. Parents chose virtual or in person. There have been approximately 120K cases of positive students and 60K cases of positive staff.

My district is doing hybrid learning and some kids can choose to come to school or not. My last class had 35 students and only 4 came to school and the rest stayed online.

Good. As a high school teacher who has been virtual all year I cannot stress enough how awful it is trying to teach online. Yes it is probably the safer option but these kids are missing so much. The lack of learning they've missed over the last year because of the pandemic will  be felt for years to come. I cannot wait to go back in the fall.

Delaware left that decision in the hands of the different school districts. Most are doing hybrid but been seeing a lot of school buses out lately so I'm guessing more kids are back in person.
