How is an average person supposed to pay that much? Not everyone has a superstar boss to pay your bills :saladga:

I feel like the worst part is there are some (not a lot) legal loopholes in which certain people can escape crushing medical debt (usually due to income), but the hospitals will never point it out and charge people anyway.

I once got an unexpected bill from the hospital for an emergency room visit, for about $233 IIRC. (Don't worry, the overall visit was MUCH MORE than that; they just break it up into multiple bills -- the hospital, each doctor you saw there, etc.) The unexpected part was that they hadn't submitted it to my insurance company, the way they normally do, even though they definitely had my insurance info. Anyway, I complained, and... nothing happened. That is to say, they still didn't submit it to insurance; but also, they never asked me about it again. No collections, etc. It just disappeared.

Not this story highlighting so much of what is wrong with our society :( Gaga (and esp Ryan) doesn’t deserve this, she is the most positive celebrity out there

Gun violence, theft, a f*ck up healthcare system, the mega-wealthy...

But it's not priceless and a lot of people whose lives are saved by doctors end up paying for it for years.

you could say saving their life ruined their life and in some cases their children’s life.

The first question you get asked when you get to the hospital here is "did this accident/injury happen at work?" If it did, you are basically off the hook. The workplace pays. Your personal insurance will NOT cover work related medical bills.

In this case, Ryan WAS working. For Gaga. The hospital would go after her for the payments.

A LOT of people in the us can’t even afford co-pays to visit a regular doctor, so they have no choice but to go to the E.R. once symptoms become serious enough. E.R.s take advantage of this and charge hundreds of dollars for these visits that usually result in hours in the waiting room, condescending attitudes from staff, medication for maybe a week, and a recommendation to a regular doctor.....a huge (HUGE) bill in the mail —-then collections—-then less opportunities due to a poor credit score. It’s a terrible cycle.
I’ve personally witnessed this in multiple states on opposite ends of the country, and there are always people in the waiting rooms in the exact same situation.

Yeah was thinking that too... if the number is real maybe he doesnt

Y'all never had to stay in the hospital and it shows. This number is very realistic even WITH insurance. They charge 6 grand just for an ambulance service. It's a serious ****ing joke. When you have a certain deductible and it's a bad deductible then you are ****ed they charge 20$ just for a single tylenol or advil in some hospitals.

Sarah reposted it :bear: it says it was started by his friend allegedly and they said they would give the money to his family.. I just hope it’s actually someone that knows him, and not someone trying to pocket the money for themselves.

I mean, it is a nice gesture and it will definitely help him while he is out of work. I don't imagine he will be back walking dogs for a good long time. He will likely need a lot of therapy and just time to heal physically. I would imagine Gaga will continue to support him (basically pay him as though he was still working) through this all, until he is back on his feet. But a little bit extra is always appreciated so that he doesn't have to stress about finances for awhile.

This would not apply if he was self employed.  A lot of people who own a dog walking service with multiple clients are self employed. He is providing a service to her, and she pays him. No different than any other company that comes to your home to provide a service (house cleaning, landscaping, pool services, etc.)  In this case she probably pays him his fee, and it is up to him to report his earnings. If he was injured on the job it would be under his own company ownership and his insurance would be billed if he had a plan. Now if she employed him directly, then it would apply, and she would be taking out taxes, social security, providing a W-2, etc....

hm yeah but surely wouldnt go up to 100k normally

You may be surprised. I worked in the healthcare industry fighting for access to care for cancer patients. Even normal people who make a decent living with good insurance routinely get stuck with bills between 50K-150K because the American healthcare system is fundamentally broken and terrible.

Even now I have friends who after an accident at work with what's considered good insurance has nearly 1 Million in bills.

the US healthcare system is TERRIBLE.

I had an emergency gallbladder removed (it was scheduled 3 days from my immediate care visit) - it's a 45 minute outpatient procedure and the bill for the hospital was $25,000 and the immediate care visit (1 ultrasound and bloodwork) was $7,000.

With insurance, I'm paying off a $1,500 bill and an additional $400 is about to be sent to collections because the hospital coded something wrong and we had to file a new claim.

Long story short, 1 night in the hospital is an obscene amount of money, let alone how long Ryan will be using their services. He's most likely an independent contractor as a dog walker and pays fully out of pocket for whatever insurance he has.

Gaga gave $500k to the thieves who took the dog.

She should be giving the dog-walker at least double that. He will have PTSD from this for the rest of his life, and she knows what trauma he will now face every day.
