Paula Jean Swearengin is a favourite to defeat Joe Manchin. She was in the netflix doc Knock Down the House. Idk if she’ll run against him, but after the 100 days, we should start to see more serious candidates.

WVs are socially conservative yet economically progressive, so since economics speaks louder than social issues, the right Dem would be a progressive who puts forth those economic policies while still supporting the cultural stuff, but not have it be the main policy.

Just to be clear, this isn't about the tiebreak. It's about the special process in which the federal budget is passed (which is immune to filibuster and only needs a simple majority), and the parliamentarian ruled that the minimum wage bill can't be snuck in bc it's not relevant enough to the budget.

This is about norms. If Kamala broke the rule, Republicans would turn around and pass every bill they wanted under reconciliation. They sought SO MUCH revenge for Obama using this to pass the ACA (no liberal federal judges confirmed for like 6 years). There are consequences to breaking norms. 

Yeah you can be pissed about this but let's not pretend like it's a no-brainer to break the rules. 

Norms are kinda over tbh. Republicans break the rules all the time tho. They often start everything. That’s why people say Dems have no fight. If they’re gonna break the rules to do evil, it’s okay to break the rules to do good too. These are all social constructs anyway, not laws of physics. 

Kamala should definitely overrule the senate parliamentarian, which unfortunately, are just plain wrong here.

Dems are lucky they have a Democratic Senator from WV at all. It takes a conservative Democrat to get elected in West Virginia. Without Manchin, we would end up with two Republican Senators in West Virginia.

I’ll try! I am extremely invested in Manchin’s downfall <3 Synema needs to go too. Altho if you only have the finances for just one, Manchin is def way worse. There’s also the option of just electing more Senate Dems in general so that Manchin doesn’t even matter, but it is definitely not an either-or type scenario.

What are you even on about? Republicans ALREADY broke the norms when they passed their $2 trillion tax cut for the rich through reconciliation.

And you really think they wouldn't have just overruled the parlamentarian had they ruled that wasn't relevant to the budget?

I'm not American, so my knowledge of the US system is close to zero, but I'm interested nonetheless. Looking in from the outside, my understanding is that the proposed min wage would be voted down in the senate. Is that the case ? If so, is there something that Kamala Harris could do to get around that ?

I understand your POV but things like minimum wage is too important nationaly to let go just because he is a "Democrat." He needs to understand that if he doesn't vote with the party he will be primaried. IMO

To the people talking about Gaga's political standings: Gaga has always been rather centrist / old school democrat. It's hard for some to understand but she's a conventional democrat through and through with a few truly left leaning beliefs like lgbtq+ rights, prison reform etc...other than that she is of the Biden, Kamala, Obama cloth of Democrats and I ADORE her with all my heart but it is a little disappointing to see that. It's disappointing only because she is too young to be like that. I noticed that most "vote blue no matter who" and pro establishment democrats tend to be older people (like 50 and ups) who think that simply putting a democrat in office is enough and they wipe their tears and fears away when a democrat is in office thinking their job is complete. People that are usually under 40 and are democrats usually endorse someone with a truly leftist agenda...a reformists who will not follow the status quo. In any regard, this entire two party situation is NOT working and the sooner a new third party forms that actually sticks to its plans then the better.

Urghhhh, 0 surprise but 100 disappointment.

I expected the "rEsPeCt ThE pRoCeSs" line but it's really hard for constituents to do that when we're literally begging our reps (while we're starving, or freezing, or getting evicted, or going bankrupt, or dying alone in ICU) to ameliorate our suffering.

I also expect "Why can't Dems get elected / re-elected?" from the same politicians in a few years because they keep flushing their damn chances away and acting like they can't fathom why. Will nothing shake them out of their inertia?
