TaylorSwift 162,746
Tousands of protesters took over Barcelona’s streets to demand the release of a rapper arrested by Spanish police after being given a jail sentence on charges of glorifying terrorism and insulting royalty in his songs. Pablo Hasel missed a deadline last Friday to surrender to police to serve a nine-month jail term handed down in 2018 and had barricaded himself in Lleida university in Spain. Dozens of police stormed Lleida university and arrested him. Spoiler Hasel was convicted over lyrics and tweets that included references to the Basque separatist paramilitary group ETA, compared Spanish judges to Nazis and called former king Juan Carlos a mafia boss. Angry demonstrations first erupted on Tuesday. Since then, protesters have turned out every night, clashing with police in disturbances which began in rapper's home region of Catalonia, but have since spread to Madrid and beyond. Demonstrators began gathering around 7pm in Barcelona, but clashes broke out as they started marching towards the police headquarters. Protesters hurled bottles, cans and firecrackers at police, who charged at them as smoke poured into the air from burning barricades. Some smashed their way into shops along Barcelona's glitzy Passeig de Gracia shopping avenue, looting stores such as Versace, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss and Diesel. Protesters also torched several motorbikes and attacked the Barcelona stock exchange building. https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20210220-police-protesters-clash-in-barcelona-at-rally-for-jailed-rapper https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN2AG0KP https://www.charlotteobserver.com/entertainment/music-news-reviews/article249397770.html https://store.taylorswift.com

Ricksies 527
People seem to look for any reason to "loot" as a form of protest these days. Terribly sad to see.

Eggs 2,948
Charged for 'insulting royalty'??? If that's true, thats utterly backwards and people are quite right to protest.
Guest
You should have the right to speak about an old king who died as a mafia boss without going to jail. This is Europe territory and he's in jail? Freedom of speech is starting to be taken away from us

Last week a reporter was fired over a sign on the news that read "Leonor leaves the country, just like her grandad." 'cause she's going abroad to study. Chromatislaps 34,854
the EU parliament should sanction the Spanish government tbh... freedom of speech >>>>> edit: if the guy incited to violence, a community service as a punishment should be fitting... jailing him goes quite far. It's not like you talk something bad about the King and you enter to jail....The rapper has lyrics that clearly shows disrespect, hate and terrorism exaltation. Sure, and some lyrics that show disrespect, hate and terrorist exaltation of a terrorist group that has been inactive for 10 years deserves jail... He is probably a jac**ss and violence is never justified, but this is freedom of speech, and the european court of human rights will punish Spain once again for things like this. Seeing how you retweet stuff of right wing parties and ultraconservative associations is quite telling
