yes, but also, let's not forget that you're allowed to leave your home in extraordinary circumstances, and as far as we know, phillip could be dying.

i'm the last person to defend the royal family, but we know barely anything about the duke's condition, and it could very well be 'extraordinary circumstances', and different hospitals have different rules for visits right now.

Yeah, this. Some hospitals are allowing visitors for patients who are at the end of life or extremely critical. It depends on the area but that hospital he is at is one of them.

I'm not sure about the rules in Britain, but in my US state when hospitals had a no visitors policy due to Covid, exceptions were made for people giving birth or people who were seriously ill and dying. For example, my sister was allowed to visit my brother-in-law when he was in the hospital over Christmas, even though the hospital had a no visitors policy, as he was dying of stage 4 cancer.

I’m not entirely sure what the rules are, but if you look at the advice for visiting someone who is in palliative care I think visits are still able to be done but it has to be arranged via the hospital etc etc. This is open to people who aren’t monarchs, so if Philip is indeed dying I think it’s perfectly reasonable that his family are able to say goodbye. I think if we see more family members visiting alone I think it’s pretty clear Philip is on his way out.

Of course don't we have the same privilege, and that is a problem. But he was asking what makes this family different, and that is privilege... whether that privilege is rightfully bestowed onto them...is a totally different matter  but lets not argue that they apparently got that privilege whether it's ethical or not.
