Japan student forced to dye her hair wins compensation

A woman in Japan has won compensation after teachers repeatedly pressurised her to dye her hair black, causing her to drop out of school.

The school did not believe her natural hair colour was brown and told her to dye it black. A vice principal checked the teenager's roots in a "surveying session" and believed it was black, not brown as she claimed.

It banned her from attending some classes and school trips because "her hair was not dyed black enough".
She was prevented for joining a school trip, her seat in a classroom was removed and her name was erased from a class list because "her hair was not dyed black enough",

A court ruled the school's actions were legal but the ex-student should get 330,000 yen ($3,100) in damages.

The court in Osaka ruled that the prefectural government caused emotional damage to the former student, now 21, by pressing her to dye her hair.
Schools rules prohibit pupils from "getting their hair permed, coloured, bleached or braided with extensions,".

That’s the dark side about Japanese culture; The completely unrealistic beauty standards and the ridiculous pressure to assimilate as much as possible.  Lots of anti-blackness thrown in as well.

this is ridiculous and happens quite common in Asia countries. Once i had a classmate, he always go to swimming training and as a result his hair is very brown. The teacher also ask him to dye it black.

Like wtf ? School rule is saying u cannot dye hair,  not saying u cannot have natural brown hair. It's nonsense too, u cannot force people to dye hair, especially  some people may not like / want to put chemicals on their hair. These kind of stupid school rules better change asap, so as some winter jacket rules in the Asia schools

same as my highschool, some boys hair is longer than eyebrow, the school prevented them from attending the class and asked them to sit in front of the principal room at the corridor  i mean lets focus on the students that really need help and not these pointless punishment

For those who don't understand, Japan have a lot of cultural things going on. From the vertical caste, to things like this.

In Japan there are proverbs that said "出る釘は打たれる (deru kugi wa utareru)" or in English, "A nail that sticks out will get hammered down."

Or in other words, people are expected to conform and not to have individuality. Hence a lot of teenagers rebels by doing it visually there. Those HARAJUKU fashion are blatant example of that.

If you're enrolled in Catholic school, it is the same in the Western Catholic school too.

my school was not a religious school but still got these stupid rules. The rules about winter jacket is that you HAVE TO bring a specific uniform jacket even u don't like to wear it or don't think it's warm enough, instead, if u have a warmer jacket from home, u are not allow to wear it to school unless it's lower than a certain temperature,  it also cannot be too colorful or big logos. These bs always makes me wanna take away all the teacher's jackets from the office and turn off their air con/heater.

I went to catholic school and we didn’t have rules like that, but where I am from catholic schools are part of the public school system. Private schools tend to be more strict about appearance.

Maybe you're from UK then? Catholic school outside are always private school and really have a lot of rules and contrabands, as I remembered it well

Canada, specifically Ontario we have two public school systems, secular and Catholic. It’s pretty stupid tbh but the catholic schools had less students so I felt like people got along better and we got more one on one time with teachers if needed. Kids didn’t even wear their uniforms properly, had piercings and dyed hair, it was all considered fine.

Honestly, people in the US who whine about "privilege" are so unaware of the amount of it they already have here compared to the rest of the world. Apparently housing and job discrimination against foreigners is really bad in Japan too.
