His candidacy, faced opposition from some board members and members of the public who argued that there wasn’t enough diversity on the council – even though there are five seats currently empty.

Those who opposed his candidacy were concerned with the fact that he is white.

The 15-person council currently only has 10 members: Two black mothers, one Asian-American, three Latinx, one Pacific Islander and three white.

Brenzel, who is the executive director of a music program for children, is openly gay. He lives in San Francisco with his husband and their young daughter.

If approved, Brenzel would have been the only father on the council

I think is great that schools want to have more representation but what about diversity? Specially if there are 5 empty seats in the board.

Thoughts?

I think diversity should also include sexuality, regardless of gender, religion or skin color. This way, LGBTQ+ people would be represented and kids struggling with their sexuality may have someone to go to and trust.

Him being gay should be enough for them to accept him if there goal is to increase diversity. Also, him being the ONLY father in that group should also be considered. This makes the school look terrible.

Race/ethnicity and gender shouldn't be the only standards of diversity. Religion, sexuality etc. must be taken into account.

Lets be honest and say they rejected him cause he is gay and not cause he is white.

Wait so he’s gay and would be the only man on the board but he wouldn’t add to diversity? Sounds suspicious.

Is it possible that it's because he's either a man or gay, and they are just using his whiteness as an excuse to not let him join?

Or there could also be something problematic on his record? I don't like jumping to conclusions.

Even if he wasn't gay and male, the council currently had more POC than white parents but they still would have rejected him because there wasn't enough diversity?
