The thing that really irritates me about the internet is that it's causing everyone to live in this vacuum where everything is happening all at once, and the context of "the past" no longer exists. Some of you are acting like Sarah said these things on tv last night when it reality some of you weren't even in kindergarten yet :bear:

People change, and Sarah absolutely has - but TIMES change too! Unless you were over the age of 13 in 2007 it can be hard to understand how and why this type of humour was "okay" back then. This was the era of P!nk's Stupid Girl, Paris Hilton's sex tape... most people were participating in this type of cruelty towards young female stars and it was all over TV.

People are still like this, but they hide behind anonymous profiles and keep it to the internet these days :triggered:

And if we're going to pull out nearly 15 year old clips of Sarah Silverman, where is the venom for Justin Timberlake? He made an entire career out of tearing her down.

What does that have to do with your statement though? What you said was making it seem like Americans are the one forcing her to apologize when that wasn't the case here at all.

What I meant was that she, as an American, is being told (for more than one person, including Americans, I suppose) to apologize for something she said (rightfully so) many years ago, and she obviously doesnt have to

You mentioning something as serious as anti-semitism when it is clearly not what is happening here is one of the main problem of lowering those issues. Her name is literally Sarah Silverman and it is one of the most common names in the US there is. I bet 99% of people including me didn’t even know she was Jewish.

There’s a history of anti-Semitic tropes around Jews controlling the media, and Silverman is known as a Jewish surname, and its part of her jokes a lot of the time.

If someone did this to you or even Gaga y’all would be jumping up and down out of your bitterness but when it is another artist suddenly it’s a cute joke. Also I saw someone mentioning how we are always dragging females? She was the one dragging mother of two babies in that video and is one of the reasons that caused her breakdown. There were backstage stories about Britney hearing those “jokes” and being desperate and crying after. The most disgusting thing is y’all are always preaching about mental health but when it’s time to show your support for someone who literally got mental health problems because of people like this woman in the OP y’all are suddenly so silent and so against the victim.

The drags around Gaga from over seven years ago are stale at this point, and dragging a comedian for a 14 year old joke is just too much. It was during the George W. Bush administration for heaven’s sake. Why are we re-litigating things that happened during Britney’s lowest point? You Britney fans really live in the past, it’s time to move on with this protecting Britney from the 2007 criticism, in hindsight a comedian roasting her amidst the drama wouldn’t have been aware of what was yet to come. Pillorying Sarah now is just weird, focus on the actual people who took advantage of her or exploited her, not someone who told an off-color joke about her. It’s time to move on from the late 2000’s.

Imagine claiming to be all about mental health and loving Gaga's message but thinking it is fine for Sarah to say this.

Disgusting.

I always disliked those Comedy Central roasts and never thought they were a great concept anyway. The ones I've attempted to watch all went so far for the jugular that I felt they were were high key degrading and not funny. I remember I did happen to see clips once from like, the old Milton Berle era of comedy, and those actually seemed kind of funny because it didn't seem like anyone was attempting to be edgy for edginess sake, and there was some modicum of respect still in their jokes (though I only seen a few clips, so I could be wrong).

Anyway, Sarah's jokes fits right in on what one would hear during a Comedy Central roast in 2007. So she delievered what she was asked of her, but Sarah had zero nuance and I wish she had found a way to be funny without crossing the line into disgusting IMO. No matter what anyone in comedy says, it's never funny to punch down (a better, funnier comedian would have found a way to be funny about the situation without degrading Britney). I wouldn't even want her apology if I was a Brit stan because now we know any apology is going to be forced and performantive on her part.

Most people in the thread aren’t saying the joke is fine though, most users are calling it tacky at best. We just don’t think expecting an apology from a comedian being paid to roast people 14 years later is productive or helpful to the cause of Free Britney. More people are becoming aware of how awful the media as a whole was to Britney back then, but why focus on one comedian for doing her job?

I can only speak for myself but I don't think Sarah's jokes were "fine". I just think it's ludicrous to drag a comedian for making jokes she was paid to do 14 years ago to make a point about the well being of Britney Spears, an issue that is happening NOW.

There is nothing productive (or quite frankly healthy) about dragging out comments from nearly two decades ago that weren't directed at you and then demanding remorse or an apology.

(Sidenote: Sarah has actually confronted her previous brand of "edgy" humour and has become an important gateway to real activism for a lot of people. Dragging her after she's done real work to be better is so dumb)

Most people at the time did not see Britney Spears jokes as punching down. Literally any comedian who talked about pop culture was making Britney jokes in 2007. Sarah Silverman was less famous than Britney at the time, and many people made fun of Britney/Lindsay and Paris for being party girls back then. You have to understand the context of these jokes. It’s not like Sarah would tell a joke about Britney like that in 2021 anyway, she has become softer and kinder over the years.

I love how "it's just a joke" is the exact same thing bullies say when you call them out :)

And isn't the principle of a roast that people who get roasted agree to it? I don't know the context but since she wasn't there and was apparently already not going well, I can't imagine Britney agreeing to that?

No one is dragging her because she’s Jewish.

Also how are u not understanding that she along with MANY others is the reason why Britney is mentally ill and is basically a prisoner. No one is dragging her but people expect apology and she should apologize. It doesn’t hurt anyone to just say sorry. It is not about being Britney fan, it is about being ****ing decent human being. You making this into some fan drama when it is not that is just beyond me at this point.

She did not agree. She was furious in the backstage when she heard the “jokes”

Sarah ****ing Silverman is not part of the reason Britney is in the predicament she is in. Blame Britney’s parents, blame Britney, blame owners of tabloid magazines, blame our society as a whole even, but comedians did not draft up legal documents that resulted in Britney’s current situation.

If you can’t handle the heat then don’t watch roasts. If you guys think Sarah is bad how can you handle comedians like Lisa Lampanelli, Joan Rivers or Bianca Del Rio?
