Kroger closes 2 California & 2 Seattle stores rather than give extra $4

Grocery giant Kroger Co. will close two of its stores in Long Beach, Calif., after the city council passed an ordinance last month requiring some supermarkets to pay employees an additional $4 an hour. 

On Jan. 19, the Long Beach City Council unanimously passed an ordinance requiring grocery stores that employ more than 300 workers across the country and more than 15 per store in Long Beach to pay their local employees an additional $4 per hour. 

The ordinance is set to last for 120 days, or until the city terminates the order, which could be extended. 

Following the order, Kroger says it has decided to close two of its stores in the area. A statement released by Kroger said two stores in its Ralphs and Food 4 Less divisions will close at their Long Beach locations. 

"As a result of the City of Long Beach's decision to pass an ordinance mandating Extra Pay for grocery workers, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close long-struggling store locations in Long Beach," said a company spokesperson. "This misguided action by the Long Beach City Council oversteps the traditional bargaining process and applies to some, but not all, grocery workers in the city."

Hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue each year but they do not want to pay some of their workers an extra $4 for a short period of time... and their excuse is the City of Long Beach's "misguided action."

wowwwwwww. It's literally temporary, during a pandemic, and they'd rather make them unemployed than cut into profits. Gross and I'm glad they're exposing themselves.

and they're obv trying to target bigger corporations that can afford it and not locally owned, w Kroger's dumbass "applies to some, but not all, grocery workers in the city"... evil!

the stores are Ralphs and Food 4 Less, i guess Kroger is the Parent Company that owns those. ?

It is absolutely maddening that at a time where large retailers are raking in billions or close to a billion in profits, they flat our refuse to give some of their employees a TEMPORARY wage increase to compensate for the risk of covid exposure by going to work and dealing with hundreds of people. Insane.

i went to a Kroger's for the first time in decades on a visit to Louisville this past weekend and while it was a delightfully presented, clean store; it was also unnecessarily MASSIVE and laid out in such a confusing way that was SO manipulative.

The staples you need? I  walked the store possibly 8 times before i found the spice rack, literally hidden in the center of a strange half aisle that you couldn't easily access, and it was not marked on the signs above. wtf? EVERYONE needs spices, or at least salt and pepper. And it was tucked away to guarantee you would walk the store several times and give in to impulse purchases. I even asked a worker where they were, and he told me "I don't know off the top of my head. I could download and look at the app." SERIOUSLY?!?!??!?!

And don't get me started on the produce!  I had to walk by aisles worth of more expensive and/or overpriced organic options to find affordable produce. And this was apparently a "nice" Kroger.

NEVER AGAIN! 

Mariano's is where it's at, my friends. Giant Eagle too.

EDIT: Or your local bodega grocery store. Where I would like to always shop but sometimes am forced with limited options. BUY LOCAL

better look at 'city ordinance' and compare that to 'dictatorship'

I don't see how gov policy can dictate privately owned and run companies and still be called a Democracy..

I worked for Kroger for 7 years as an accountant. This company makes more than enough money to give their workers an income they deserve. I’d wait every day for the Brinks company to come and pick up between 70k-100k and that’s just cash deposits, card transactions brought the daily revenue up 2x that cash value. 
 

they over work their employees, demand 150% labor, have every opportunity to show workers appreciation but they don’t, have a cultural council team that raises money with their own workers money to buy “goods” like dollar sodas and cheap snacks and all because the bosses get a HUGE bonus at the end of the year for keeping store expenses low. 
 

all I can say is GREED is the heart of this company!

And you know some people will blame the workers for wanting a livable wage or the legislators who work to give them a livable wage rather than the millionaires and billionaires who decided to close the stores over a temporary $4 raise.

Ugh. I'm moving to a new state soon and the area I'm looking at looks like the main grocery store is a Kroger  I really don't want to support this place so hopefully I can find somewhere else to shop for most things.

Because giving essential workers a temporary raise so that they can pay their bills is so evil, huh? Oh how dare people want to make ends meet! Don’t they know that’s only allowed for the upper classes!!?!?one!!?!

The company I work for gave us a $2 raise but took it away when things started getting even worse 

I feel bad for these employees though because now they’ll have to look for another job.
