While yes, he does state how renewable sources such as wind and hydro are the safest; nuclear energy isn't actually that far behind, and is thousands of times safer than any type of fossil fuel. Nuclear energy can save us and this is unbelievable that country like Germany are going back to coal Of course nuclear waste is a problem but buried underground it causes no harm and surely we can find a solution to it before we lack of space to store it. People can live safely above these areas. And if you are talking about plants and animals keep in mind that air pollution and global warming affect every living organisms on Earth. Nuclear waste stops being a problem after some years. Also, a lot of research is happening to figure out ways to store them safely underground where they would not affect the environment around it (eg underground cavern in a dessert, plus safety structures). If stored properly and securely, it's safe. Of course something could happen and cause a disaster. But if you compare how often such disasters happen to the actual effects of having fossil fumes lingering in the air; nuclear waste storage is the better alternative. Obviously, I don't think Nuclear energy is what we should be striving towards. Enigma 7,182 Posted February 3, 2021 Share Posted February 3, 2021 Basically the potential harm of nuclear is higher, but the chances of that happening are insanely low Whereas fossil fuels are always harmful, just less so, and the harm becomes greater in the long run. If stored incorrectly, then possibly; but only because of human error though. And that's just the thing. Everyone fails to remember that waste generated from the fossil fuel industry (coal ash, greenhouse gasses) are an even bigger threat to the overall future of our entire planet. I know the storage method for nuclear waste isn't practical, but we need to remember it can be confined, mitigated, and controlled by humans. Whereas the current alternative (gas, oil, and coal) is basically a runaway train that gets lost in our atmosphere. We have zero control unless we make a full stop. So, although the storage method isn't practical, a temporarily reliance on nuclear power while the fossil fuel industry is dismantled, and renewable energy sources and infrastructure are put in place; would be an ideal alternative for a greener future. Nuclear energy doesn't produce large quantities of waste anyway, so it could be securely stored in well-protected locations until we develop a way to properly dispose of it. 0110100001100101011011000110110001101111 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
