Madeira Island + Azores islands combined have only about 10% the population of mainland Portugal and have much more limited resources. It is usually the otherway around that the mainland has to help the islands showing how desperate and overwhelmed the medical system has become in the mainland especially This is the second time Austria makes itself available to take on patients from other EU Nations. In earlier waves Austria took in patients from both France and Italy who were hit very hard earlier in the pandemic

Its bad when other EU Nations have to offer help but u know its really bad when the mainland sends patients to the islands Theres a reason all the islands have like 10% of Portugals population and the mainland 90% yet most portuguese immigrants you see in many Countries especially Canada & USA (most went in 70s and 80s) are predominantly from the islands No shade to the islands they are lovely but poverty was always worse there and development further behind than in the mainland despite somewhatch catching up in recent years

Yeah apparently they have lots of frequent travellers from all the places the new variants are from, the UK, South Africa and Brazil. Which then leads to this sadly Coven Season

What @Pickle Boy said Portugal has close ties and frequent travellers from all 3 major Nations with the new variants (UK, South Africa and Brazil) UK because of EU ties and Brazil and South Africa because of immigration in past decades so it just got hammered with the new variants

Akiki 3,900
Not sure if this is true. While it's true that Austria offered assistance, the Portuguese government didn't gave an answer yet. There is still some room for pacients but yes, we are very close to colapse. Last time I heard the news they are giving orders to extend the capacity to the maximum. Right now the reason why pacients are being transfered its to assure that the machines work properly. Specially since one of the oxigen supplies was having problems (pressures issues) in one big hospital. The other reason it's to make space in the ones thar are getting packed. Santa Maria Hospital is the biggest in Portugal and its under great pressure. This week they decided to create new rooms for trials and the long lines of ambulances were reduced. No. That's not the problem. Sadly we made a wrong decision in the second wave. We loosened the restrictions to much. After the second one we decided that we would have christmas (5 people maximum) and a very restricted new years eve. Sadly it went terrible bad and the numbers exploded making the third wave. The timing was also bad cause it matched with the new covid variations that are more easy to spread.
