Uh ok, good luck convincing 7.7 individual people to quit meat in the next 10 years before irreversible climate disaster happens I guess?

Seems like a very silly naive pipedream

It’s not about convincing. Meat eaters will eventually have to be FORCED to be vegan after ecological collapse. You can get on board willingly now, or you will be pushed on board in the coming decades. :ohwell:

Y'all are making me feel bad for deciding on a burger for lunch today :huntyga:

Tbh, I think vegans are going after the wrong people. The first priority should be to have elected officials slap regulations on the meat companies to shrink their impact on the climate somehow. They should also be investing in the initiatives to create cruelty free meat substitutes like my impossible whopper here :fan:

After that's said and done, then they can go about showing people how to substitute animal products for other things in meals. And they need to do so without acting superior or shaming people for their food decisions 'cause that'll only make the meat eater buy chicken nuggets purely out of spite :laughga:

All that said, you will NEVER get rid of meat entirely. Like...ever :laughga: as long as humanity exists, so will real beef, pork, chicken, fish, etc. So total elimination shouldn't even be a goal because it's completely unrealistic and will not happen.

But lessening the meat industry's footprint and shrinking the industry as a whole are very feasible goals.

I'm starting to get lost in the PETA threads on GGD :laughga:

But I'm here for this.  Human beings are not superior just because we have so-called "consciousness" and "free will."  We are nothing but a collection of particles that thrive well on this planet and its distance from the sun.  Other sentient creatures are just the same. (Way simplifying, I know).

My take is to treat every sentient creature fairly and without harm -- or at least to the best extent that we can -- as animal/sentient creature treatment varies from culture to culture.

The big problem is the way PETA communicates its message.  It is so alienating/offputting.  I don't blame people for not following PETA.  But, at the end of the day, they make some strong points -- and help us in questioning our so called "human" superiority.

Is this supposed to justify animal abuse and exploitation?

No. It's just me saying that I disagree with the notion that humans are not superior to animals.

The question of support or otherwise for animal abuse and exploitation is a different one in my opinion. I admit that I haven't given serious thought to veganism. I eat meat because I have always eaten meat, and I enjoy it. I haven't considered the morality of it. I know that it may be taken out of my hands in the not too distant future.

It’s the same logic, tho. It’s about hurting the innocent just for the sake of it. There’s no good reason why billions of animals are tortured every year for their meat/skin/fur/milk/etc. When we as human are advanced enough to go without all of that. We aren’t cavemen anymore.

Look, I’m not saying that killing a dog is the same as committing a hate crime against a POC or an LGBTQ member. I’m saying that we, as a species, are capable of not doing either of those. And we should be more aware of how our actions affect others, both humans and animals.

wow, they should stop responding at this point. you have really good arguments and I'm not even vegan.

Glad to see someone with sense here. GGD is an absolute mess when it comes to discussing animal rights.

It's not about putting one thing over another, but caring about them both at the same time. We can fight racism, homophobia, sexism AND fight for animals not being tortured, killed, put alive into boiling water or even eaten alive, at the same time.

I didn't eat eggs this month:ladyhaha:, I know its not that much but I want to slowly transition into a vegetarian diet, each month I'll stop eating something non-vegan like meat, chicken, fish etc etc.

I find it perfectly fine to eat animals as long as you kill them instantly, a shot in the head, for example. But, there's an evil country called China, where people there do the the worst cruelties to dogs. I try to forget what I read months ago, but I'll never. Thank god I didn't watch the video, but only the title is disturbing. Those people will pay someday.

People are going crazier and crazier these days, Im not saying animal abuse shouldn't stop, of course it should stop and Im vegetarian myself. But people are going crazier with going to the extreme with any social issue that it bcomes a laughing stock and does the opposite of what they wanna do

How is killing a dog any worse than killing any other animal? Shooting animals in the head might be slightly more ethical than like...forcing them to experience a slow and agonizing death, but it’s not practical to “ethically” kill billions of animals for billions of meat eaters.

REALITY

No one is trying to convince you that an ant and a human are worth the same. If anyone is given the choice to kill an ant or a human, they’re going to kill the ant. However, the meat and dairy industry are having to meet the demands of billions of people, so they are set up to produce as much product as possible, at the cost of billions of sentient beings. The way humans are mistreating chickens, cows, pigs, etc. is what is being questioned. It is easy to forget that we evolved from great apes, so I think that’s where they’re coming from, trying to asses the discrepancy of love we attribute to different species with similar sentience.

Also yes, nature is brutal. But humans have built up civilization to a point that this conversation of “Well it happens in nature so it must be okay!” is pointless. (Natural carnivores don’t cook their meat either, so by that standard cooked food must be bad too). We have options available to us that other animals do not have, so continuing to support meat and dairy industries when we don’t have to is a personal choice (a choice I’m not attacking anyone for, just mentioning the difference between humans and natural carnivores).

I hope this doesn’t come across as combative, I’m just passionate about helping animals and the planet 💖

Again, I'm not denying that the meat and dairy industry are terrible. I don't think anyone would deny that. The way that they treat their animals is just objectively wrong. I'm not an anti-animal rights person, but I do think that this personification of animals can sometimes be too overbearing and unnecessary.

Maybe it's their messaging or something, but when groups like PETA talk about "ending human supremacy" and ending "speciesism," to me, that sounds like they want to advocate that humans and all other animals are on an equal playing field. And that's just objectively wrong. That's when I brought in the whole "nature is brutal" comment. The truth of the matter is that there is "speciesism" in the natural world. It's not necessarily an objectification or a systematic oppression, but it's a predator-prey relationship.

When I also brought up the "nature is brutal" comment, I also wanted to point out that just because humans do inhumane things to animals doesn't mean that other animals don't do "inhumane" things to other animals too. Talking about the meat and dairy industries specifically, yes, those are unnecessary and unethical practices. That's frankly on a whole other level; however, it seems kind of weird that when people talk about protecting animals, they always talk about it from a human-animal perspective. Why not an animal-animal perspective? And again, before you bring it up, I understand that humans, in many ways, treat animals in many different, worse, ways than some animals do. However, that doesn't justify the fact that there aren't animals out there who are brutal in nature.

Like, you can't protect some without protecting all.

I'll never be convinced killing animals for food is immoral no more than I'll be convinced that my pet cat, fish or chickens are slaves, or the zoo I volunteer at is a prison :huntyga:

Vegans can yell about morals all they want but I just simply will never agree.

There's nothing about animal rights that I agree with that isn't also covered by animal welfare.

Do you feel him sir?
