Imagine people going to prison to rehabilitate themselves or put themselves on a better path by getting an education or training while serving their time.

I find it ironic that a lot of the ppl that say stuff like this are the same ppl that always say stuff like "i hope he rots in jail for life" suggesting no chance for rehabilitation (i knownyoy are not one of those hypocrites)

Me personally i dont even think jail is the best form of punishment for most crimes unless its someone whos an outright danger to society. Putting someone stuck in a cell just serves to destroy ones mental health. And definitely more emphasis on fixing their lives is needed

I also think many prison sentences are too long. Some judges are too harsh especially on more trivial crimes

btw the racist, for-profit prisons are still gonna exist. I don’t know the impact of this action after reading this tho. I did forget that most private prisons are state run. Biden should stop that in some way...

Shaun King is a proven liar. Why would you follow or repost him? You might as well repost Perez.

There are real issues with justice tbh.

Jails and prisons just serve to dispose of undesirables, punish people, and a lot of folks end up coming out even worse because they joined a gang or they were forced to do things by other prisoners.

And there's a real inequity issue too based on income which is one of my biggest concerns personally.

Jeff Bezos paid something like 20 grand in parking fines and just straight up ignored the laws. An average person might get one ticket, not have enough to pay it, then it's off to jail :smh: probably lose their job, have a whole host of personal issues, it's b.s.

Yeah, the problem is it can all be undone just as easily if a Republican beats Biden or Kamala in 2024 :spin:

Which is why the Democratic house and senate need to get moving on getting these orders properly made into bills and signed into law! :grr:

Here in Canada it all depends if we get a majority or minority government. If its majority pretty much everything a party says goes but if its a minority aint nothing ever getting passed

Im sure same idea in the US with seats but in Canada it can be worse cuz we have 3 relevant parties vs 2 in the US which makes a majority often difficult to get

We often spend years and years with minority governments and its not fun cuz its snap elections like every 2 years and nothing gets done and the few things that are passed have a heavy load of compromise :ladyhaha:

The bright side is tho is that at least good stuff is equally as hard to undo as it was to do in the first place :enigma:

This is GREAT news for federal prisons. Perhaps states will follow suit. Not much Biden or his administration can do in that respect. But this is a huge victory.

This is the first step towards racial equality in America.

For those unaware, private prisons have to be filled nearly to capacity or they fine the state for ALOT of money.

This is why there is a systematic process of keeping poor people clustered and held down, predominantly black people, in order to give them no choice but to be involved in illegal activities to survive, giving the police a crop of people to choose from to avoid the massive fines.

Its deeper than that, but its a load baring move.
