Military Finds Force Feeding, Raw & Gross Food In Nursing Homes (Canada)

The Canadian Military which was dispatched to help out in some nursing homes amid the covid19 crisis has reported more instances of abuse and neglect this time involving food

 

There were reports coming including:

 

- raw hot dogs served

- fish so over cooked it looked like jerky

- undercooked potatoes and fries

- unheated soup

- force feeding that made seniors choke

Its literally been one scandal after another in Canadian nursing homes last few years like wtf

 

The one of the woman who died because she couldnt breathe in agony pressing emergency help button and nurses laughing in the background goofing off in particular pissed me off

This is so sad and horrific. One of the many reasons why I will try my hardest not to put my parents in a nursing home unless it is absolutely necessary.

My grandma lived in a nursing home and I can attest to this. Hers might not have been as bad as that but there was still neglect. My mom was there almost everyday to make sure my grandma was taken care of and she was always appalled at how lazy and careless some of the staff was.

I miss my granny but I'm glad she doesn't have to endure this anymore.

Nursing homes in Canada are a f*cking mess, it's disgusting.

I knew a 97 year old who had a daughter who was close to 80 herself and didnt have the energy anymore to care for her mom who required constant attention

 

But she still went to the home almost every day to drop off food so she didnt always have to eat the mediocre stuff they served and to make sure she got attention

 

Ppl who have loved ones in nursing homes have to put a real effort to see them as often as possible and also care for them in anyway they can becausw if you rely on nursing homes alone they will often be neglected

This is why in my culture we don’t tend to put old people in nursing homes.

The way white Americans just throw their parents in there will always be an alien concept to me.

This. If it did become necessary I’d rather hire a home nurse where I could monitor the cameras.

Oh definitely. My mom was a nurse by profession so she was used to taking care of the elderly, and she was a caregiver for my grandma for 20 years, the last two years before my grandma died it was almost full-time. My grandma always complained that the food was terrible so my mom would go out and buy her food so she could eat something decent.

I hate that that's where she lived her last years. Granted she lived at my mom's house for a while but it didn't work out.

I get it in some circumstances as a last resort

 

Nowadays with ppl living longer om average its not that uncommon for old people no longer in the best of shape themselves to still have parents who are alive (such as the 80 year old with the 97 year old mother i wrote of above) and it may simply be too tough for them

 

Others may have health conditions that are too difficult to take care of and need constant care and if you have to work etc u simply cant take care of them properly

 

However i do think in North American white culture some people resort to it too quickly sometimes when taking care of their parents isnt impossible but just an inconvinience... When thats the case i definitely look down on that too

I feel like this is every nursing home everywhere in the world. They have way too little people who actually care about their job and way to many who just do it because they have to. And I get why people put their parents there, despite them knowing how bad it can be.

Not all of our grandparents were good people. Mine sure as hell were not (specifically the males). My mom spent 20+ years of her life being the caretaker for 3 disabled people. She was a caretaker before I was even born. Taking care of your now disabled father, who has mentally and physically abused your entire life, is not easy. Especially when he's still in full control of his mental capabilities and dedicates his entire remainder of his life to making caretaking a living hell. It's easy to say "we take care of our family" when the family you're taking care of doesn't smear their feces all over the entire house (in full knowledge of what they've done), frisbee ceramic dishes into your face because the chive garnish on the mashed potatoes is too excessive for their liking or scream the entire night so nobody in the house can sleep.

The way Western cultures treat their elderly is frequently disgusting, and the population as a whole doesn't care because they are not old, and prefer not to imagine that they ever will be old. We put our most vulnerable old people into care homes staffed by people doing very hard work for minimum wage, because the work that they do is so undervalued, and then wonder why this sort of thing is so common. Care workers need to be paid more and receive better training and support.

I'm in the US. A couple months ago, my mom was in the hospital and discharged into a short-term rehab facility. She wasn't even there 24 hours before they sent her in an ambulance back to the hospital because they almost killed her. Those staff don't know what they're doing and don't care. She had to go back in the hospital a couple weeks ago, and they wanted to discharge her back into rehab. We said no way, and instead she came home and has healthcare providers (nurses, physical therapists, etc.) check on her at home. It's especially bad during the pandemic, where there's no accountability and oversight.

I really hope one of the legacies of Covid is an overhauling of Canada’s long term care system so all of these people did not die in vain. It was already in shambles before, but this has highlighted to everyone just how badly managed some of these homes are. It makes me sick to my stomach. There is also a huge ageist attitude among many that’s akin “well they were going to die anyway”... it’s awful.
