AlexanderMagno 10,746
It is definitely more contagious, hence more people will get infected and more people will die. I’m not sure if we’re going through a second of a third wave anymore, but I’m sure we are going through hell. And unfortunately people are not taking this seriously anymore, they are so desensitized. this is not about covid patients or deaths anymore, it’s about everyone. A young man who was run over by a car might die because the hospitals are in a catastrophic state and there are simply not enough beds, not enough healthcare professionals, not enough blood or equipments to take care of everyone. We stretch and stretch our capacity beyond belief, because in Healthcare we can never say “we can’t accept that job”, but it is unbearable.

Oriane 22,815
Didn't they say that already when it started a month ago? Or is this yet another variant? The only GGD member who can read / Credits to Celloo Deng for the profile pic!
xoxo Craig 55,649
Just now, Oriane said: Didn't they say that already when it started a month ago? Or is this yet another variant? No its the same variant that was discovered last year. They "didn’t know" if it was more deadly at that point even though early data suggested it... but what they did know is that this variant is 70% more transmissible. Now we know that its 70% more transmissible and a minimum of 30% more deadly compared to the orginal Covid-19 strain End Racism Now

Rj Barker 3,331
Meh, there's no hard evidence really. They are just saying it MAY be but alot of factors come in to play with deaths don't they. And we are giving out vaccines at a rapid pace, and it works against it. They are only saying this to scare people into staying home as people aren't abiding by the rules here. Itll probably work too.
BUtterfield 8 41,819
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday that there's "some evidence" that the COVID-19 variant first discovered in the United Kingdom could be more deadly than the original strain. "We've been informed today that in addition to spreading more quickly, it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant, which was first identified in London and in the southeast, may be associated with a higher degree of mortality," Johnson said at a press conference Friday. The warning about the new strain comes after experts have maintained that there was no evidence that it could be more deadly. Johnson added that "all current evidence" shows that both vaccines the U.K. has approved - one from Pfizer-BioNTech and the other from AstraZeneca - "remain effective" against both strains of the virus. Patrick Vallance, the British government's chief scientific adviser, said there's no evidence of an increase in mortality from the new variant among those who are hospitalized. Xoxo Adriana 15,040
so are we believing a prime minister or the scientists who are the ones actually closely assessing the virus? the fact that he’s completely undermining what scientists have already disclosed about the new variant
