It's why McConnell has already layed out that he's not giving Trump a get out of jail free card. Instead of "waiting to see the facts" like he did with the last impeachment, he's come out and said that Trump's responsible. Completely unprovoked too, so you know he's most likely going to vote to give other Republican senators the coverage to do it, at least 17 of them. Believe me, they want this impeachment to wipe their slate clean more than even the Dems do.

This. Also, as abhorrent as some of the senators are, they know full well that if Trump runs again, he could very well win the Republican primary. Which, in itself, is sad and scary.

If he runs again there's no way he won't win the nomination again, in 2 years many in congress are up for re-election and since that's before any presidential primary has started they'll be pushed to support "the last guy" which will only bolster support.
