You all really don't get it, huh? The vaccine rollout plan isn't designed to reinforce your biases or make you feel like "justice" is being served.

This is about public health. The Center of Disease Control and Prevention has put out specific guidance that the vaccine rollout achieves three goals:

(1) Decrease COVID-19 deaths and serious disease

(2) Preserve functioning of society 

(3) Reduce the extra burden COVID-19 is having on people already facing disparities

Vaccinating people from this virus who are at high risk of severe illness, regardless of whether is genetic, behavioral, or occupational, IS THE TOP PRIORITY! Our hospitals are full capacity all over and they're literally being forced into providing triage care for EVERYONE. That means if you burn or cut yourself or are having a heart attack and have to rush to the ER, doctors and nurses can only do the minimum possible things to save your life before they have to rush onto the next patient. 

We HAVE to stop that, and that means vaccinating the people most vulnerable to severe illness. Otherwise we will continue to have a complete collapse of society (lockdown!) because we cannot afford to operate our healthcare system like that.

The fewer people that need hospitalization, the better. And if their habits make them prone to having worse covid cases then by all means, vaccinate them first.

I do understand the frustration, but the reality is, there are many conditions and diseases which you could claim are brought on by the person themselves as opposed to being genetic or just happening for an unknown reason. 

Doctors take a hippocratic oath. They have to help people no matter what, even people whose conditions are a result of their own behavior. What we don't need is to bring judgment into healthcare, especially when these things aren't as simple as they may seem. Moreover, as others have noted, it's a matter of public health and not overwhelming our hospitals.

The real anger and frustration shouldn't be directed at smokers; it should be directed at the failure to have an efficient vaccine roll-out and at the broken healthcare system in the US. 

(And for what it's worth, I'm a non-smoker who hates the smell of it, so I'm not saying this for my own benefit. I'll probably be one of the last people eligible for the vaccine because of my age and lack of comorbidities and the fact that I can work from home.)

We're also not really running out of vaccines here yet. Our rollout logistics have been SH!T. We have millions of doses going unused bc states were not prepared to administer them, and many doses are even being thrown away.

Also, New York just announced on press that they are running out of vaccine supply.  It will be gone by next week.

 

Not to mention Grump administration actually don't have federal supply, so it has become a race now to get vaccinated. Best of luck.

I'm a smoker and I agreed with you initially but then after reading @MJHollandposts (minus the petty one ) I had to change my stance - it isn't about what's 'just' but saving lives indeed.

Ppl who are obese and with diabetes are also at higher risk and most of the time unless you have a health condition these are self inflicted by habits as well

 

In fact the majority of health conditions unless they are purely genetic are self inflicted to some extent or another

 

Smoking is an obvious one u see but most other ppl with major conditions have other self harming habits whether alcohol, poor diet, lack of exercise etc that caused them. So what's the difference?

 

The percentage of the population that's truly puts a full effort into being as healthy as they can be is actually quite low. Most of us (myself included) have habits that self harm our health. It's just the reality, will power is tough to muster up to the full tbh

There are people in hospitals working around the clock 24/7 to help save people from this virus because its so deadly. There are people like my mother who has medical issue after medial issue and has a compromised immune system. There are people with severe asthma that even a spec of dust could be fatal. These people who contract covid will unlikely survive, and I believe we should prioritise people like them for the vaccine. Key workers, medial staff, people who are literally vulnerable to illness... 

Just because you've smoked and trashed your own health doesn't mean that you should be entitled to a vaccine. Are we going to give people who have had to deal with second-hand smoke the vaccine too? They've had to live in an environment with their health compromised due to actions of another person. So if anything, it should be those people who get the vaccine. 

Addiction is real and should be treated both physically and mentally. There is a real struggle that comes with it... but I would rather see people with chronic pain and other serious health conditions get it before smokers.
