South Korea recorded more deaths than births in 2020 for the first time ever, raising fresh alarm in the country which already has the world's lowest birth rate.

Only 275,800 babies were born last year, down 10% from 2019. Around 307,764 people died.

The figures prompted the interior ministry to call for "fundamental changes" to its policies.
Last month, President launched several policies aimed at addressing the low birth rate, including cash incentives for families.

Their modern affluent lifestyle, with its car dependency, air travel, fast fashion, and oversized homes, has an outsized impact on our planet’s health.

Meanwhile, the communities that do the least damage to our climate, most of whom live in or originate from the global south, bear the brunt of the impact of the climate crisis.

Furthermore, we have more than enough resources and money on this planet to go around like 10 times over. However, the rich and wealthy like to hoard, while billions live along or below the poverty line.

I don't think you're coming after me don't worry haha, that's interesting to know. But what about food sources? Land? Surely the strain on the planet is reaching breaking point?

There’s plenty of food thrown out at each supermarket each day. Same goes for bakeries, events (weddings, birthdays, etc) and the list goes on.

In the west, there’s this whole mass-consumerism ideology where people make more of one thing, and it just sits on shelves until people purchase it. Sustainable food will never be an issue, as long as climate change isn’t an issue. But of course those two go hand in hand. And the kicker is that they are both caused by one root cause - rich people wanting to get richer.

In short, the people who will suffer the most are the poor, especially those in countries outside of the west. Of course, you can still live in a western country and feel the impact of this ever growing problem. We see it as extreme poverty and homelessness in the streets.

Unfortunately the only consequences of this will be that in a few decades older Koreans will have no one to look after them.

There will also be shortages in their workforce though, which will probably mean a lot more immigration into the country will be encouraged.

Humanity already produces 1 and a half times as much food as it needs, and with newer technologies like vertical farms, we are only getting better at producing food. Currently a third of all food goes to waste.

The problem is not overpopulation. The problem is that we are abysmal at distributing the resources we have already - and I'm not sure if we're going to get better at that anytime soon

And a significant chunk of South Koreans belong to that 6.5% of the world population. It's one of the richest countries in the world, an extremely consumerist society, high inequality, very little green politics, and thus very high carbon emissions per capita.

 

If we want all countries in the world to eventually be able to reach the level of wealth average South Koreans enjoy, we do need all countries to stimulate lower birthrates, besides making their economies circular. A country like Nigeria is not going to stay poor forever, which is why I think that the prospect of 900 million Nigerians by the end of the century is worrying. The whole world should strive for birthrates comparable with those in South Korea.

A lot of food is wasted and never consumed... Stuff not properly recycled... 

 

The most populated countries are generally not even the biggest consumers

 

I don't think the issue is population, it's mismanagement of resources and excessive consumption and waste by the wealthier 20% of worlds population

 

In some developed nations as much as 40% of food goes unconsumed as it spoils in stores or homes before getting a chance to be consumed
