sillynate 6,170
If I live to be that old I’m telling all the people who came after me that I ate a pine cone everyday and that’s why I’m still alive
Ziggy 14,302
People are like “why don’t old people take covid seriously? It’s a once in a century pandemic!” when these hella old folk have lived through a ton of “once in a century” things. WWI, WWII, Cold War, global depression, rise and fall of communism. even someone today who lives to 2120 wouldn’t see the massive changes this woman would have seen because she saw the very fabric of western society shift from a labor based one to information based with the advent and commercialization of the computer and internet. And for her, that big shift actually happened somewhat late in life lol it’s insane to think about how different the world looked in 1903 compared to today. There are some critical theories and medical breakthroughs that will actually have to work and be successful such as growing your own organs and replacing them and more importantly finding a way to slow ageing itself because there are parts of the body that wouldn't be as easily replaced as a kidney or liver or even a heart. Removing senile cells like they've done in rats appears to increase life expectancy significantly but it certainly wouldn't push to 150 on its own not even close A lot of things would have to work and come together And even If all these things work and they are right about the first person born living to 150 has already happened... It unfortunately doesn't mean the general population will have access to these breakthroughs anytime soon which will probably remain very expensive for decades Either way, technological advancement is hard to predict. A lot of optimist scientists thought decades ago we would be much further along in space exploration by now than we actually are. So u have to take certain claims with a grain of salt

So u have to take certain claims with a grain of salt when i heard it i was a little skeptical. cause i thought... how is that possible? i know there are advances in modern medicine and i guess food is better these days, but haven't there always been people who reached really advanced ages like 110 or whatever, even before modern medicine? (or am i wrong?). in other words, i feel like having someone live to 118, while being very rare, is not unheard of in the past. whereas to push that limit to 150 with a generation now sounds kind of out there and soon? unless there's some sort of significant breakthrough in medicine or whatever in the next 100 years. Better food and living conditions merely prevent premature wear and tear in your body and even help keep cells healthier longer and prevent premature ageing as well. It does not in itself regenerate your cells or slow ageing below a default rate, it just prevents the premature damage from your environment or poor maintenance Standard medicine also doesn't truly make one's life span go beyond normal human limits. We have medications and treatments and surgeries that can help manage health conditions so that those health conditions don't kill you prematurely... For example if you develop diabetes or high blood pressure, we have meds to help control that so that those conditions don't in turn damage your body in other ways that kill you earlier... We have surgeries to correct certain problems as well that might otherwise kill you before your potential But 21st century medicine so far does not stop our cells ageing in themselves and our bodies getting weaker and shutting down. They can prevent you from dying too early from a condition but old age will still get u What modern nutrition and medicine has essentially done is allowed more people not to die in their 60s and 70s because of premature deaths and allowed more people to live to 80s and 90s from old age But contrary to common belief, people in the past were not all dying at 50. There was a lot of infant mortality and premature deaths from infections or conditions they couldn't deal with which brought down the average. But there was always lucky and healthy individuals that did not require such medical interventions and still loved to old age. 200 years ago we had people live to 80, 90 or even beyond. It just wasn't as many people as today So currently in short medicine does not increase your maximum potential life span. It just increases your chances of actually getting there by intervening in conditions that may cut your life short. That's why more people reach old age now but the old age limits haven't changed much. We have more people reaching very old ages now, but the oldest ages havent really gone up much. For example these super centenarians (age 110 or older) have been documented for many many decades now. There are more people reaching these absurd ages, but the actual age limit people can reach still isn't budging. 115 to 118 is still usually the range that the oldest person in the world is and that's not changing, there have only been 2 or 3 verified exceptions of ppl that went even past that but the oldest Jeanne Calment (122 years) wasn't even any time recently So basically to actually cross these thresholds standard medicine or better living conditions isn't gonna do it. It's gonna require revolutionary techniques like the ones I mentioned in my last comment actually working and coming true. Popping pills to manage ur conditions isn't gonna make you live to 130 no matter how good they get
