I think the current state of California politicians (Gavin Newsom, Nancey Pelosi ... et al have had a big hand in the current events regardless of the pandemic... with their tax first policies.... like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still. G U C C I 5,578 Posted December 31, 2020 Share Posted December 31, 2020 I have been to LA twice in the past two years and I was absolutely appalled the first visit over the state of the city and famous sites within and around it. The second time it was even worse. I have great sympathy for the homeless but allowing them to take up residence on any sidewalk they want in any city is ridiculous. They should be zoned into a specific area where they are housed, given mental health and general health resources, help with learning a trade or earning a degree and allowed to live how they want without taking away from the people working so hard to live in a great place with amazing amenities that welcomes and attracts tourists. These politicians claim to care and want to make a difference but really its all about money, power, and narcissism. Its also the same way in San Francisco. San Diego doesn't have the volume or the centralization of homeless ,, but back areas and beaches are kinda salted thru with homeless camps. like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still. I know that Republicans are trying to recall him, but I wonder if there's a progressive unease with him as well? Please don’t get intimidated by the size. ) Much easier said than done. The reality is that multiple areas would be required all across the city because the homeless population is just too large. Thousands of locals would probably fight against the city because these designated areas are going to be next to someone’s neighborhood and Americans love litigation. Drug addiction is also a serious problem plaguing the homeless population. How do we ethically deal with that? Is it right to force someone into treatment against their will? And how would we enforce it? The obvious answer to many would be jail time but that isn’t solving anything at all. It would just make things worse. I believe social programs could definitely help get many off the street but even with that the homeless situation will probably not be solved within the next two decades. And I don’t buy that politicians are ignoring the issue out of greed or selfishness. Alleviating the homeless crisis would literally make the politicians in charge the most popular in the city and state’s history. The crisis is just so complex that nobody knows how to address it without causing more problems down the road. Not even the most staunch advocates for the homeless have the right answers. I know I don’t. But I’m fairly sure this would require federal assistance because of the scale of the problem. Also, here’s an interesting fact. Los Angeles has always had a difficult relationship with the homeless. Back when the city was still an ultra conservative small city, homeless people from across the Midwest and east coast flocked to it because the weather was perfect for someone who couldn’t guarantee themselves a roof. The fact that it was so far away from the core population centers of that time also made it an appealing destination because there was this unspoken promise of freedom as well. Conservative Los Angeles dealt with them by arresting them, chaining them, and forcing them to literally expand the city’s roads. (Also back then Los Angeles was marketing itself as a sunny white city perfect for young White families wanting to escape minorities, but the ads kinda backfired because it wasn’t just the perfect cookie-cutter White families that saw these promotions. ) California’s history is actually fascinating but anyways this is getting off topic. Whatever CA, specifically Los Angeles leadership is doing or not doing, it’s clearly not benefiting the population. I would love to strip them of their power. If the people that live in LA want change, they just have to vote for local representatives that represent that change. If they aren’t, then that’s their choice.
