Senator Josh Hawley Announces Intent to Challenge Electoral Vote Count

According to Politico, Sen. Josh Hawley (R- Mo.) will join Reps. Mo Brooks (R- Al.) and Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) in challenging the electoral college votes delivered to Congress on January 6th. 

His objection will require both the House and Senate to debate and then vote on the validity of electoral votes in whichever state was the subject of the challenge. No Democrat has indicated they would vote against certifying the results, and seeing as though the party holds a majority in the House the challenge will end there; in the unlikely event that the House does vote against certification, Senators would be expected to overwhelmingly kill the objection with all 48 seated Democrats and well over the required 3 Republicans having indicated they oppose Trump's efforts to overturn the election.

Senator Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, said that she was ready to work with Biden "when [he] takes office." Fellow Alaska Republican Dan Sullivan referred to him as the "President-elect." 

Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine), Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah) all explicitly congratulated Biden on his win shortly after the election, while Maj. Leader Mitch McConnell acknowledged that Biden and Harris were President-elect and Vice President-elect, respectively, in early December when the Electoral College formally voted. Other Republican officials joined him.

There were unsuccessful attempts made by a handful of Democrat congressmen and women to block certification of the 2016 election results, but there is no recent precedent for a successful challenge. 

President Trump spent Wednesday tweeting about fraud in Georgia, specifically, and more generally in every state he lost. 

Biden's social media is filled with posts about vaccine distribution, but top ally and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York tweeted that "Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be sworn in January 20th."

Congresspeople who do this should be expelled from Congress if/when their attempt to destroy democracy fails.

I used to like Sen. Hawley and would have supported his inevitable 2024 campaign but he is really just Trump without the charisma

That would mean Reps. Raskin, Jayapal, and Waters would be gone as well, since they objected in 2017.

Can’t they only object to the state they represent? I don’t see how congressmen from Trump states objecting their electoral votes are going to benefit them.

This is all charades anyways, McConnell has made it clear that the senate will confirm Biden (even if there are a few Republican outliers) and republicans couldn’t do anything if they tried. Invalidating a states electoral votes requires a 2/3 majority in both chambers of congress which would be impossible.
