Economy 52,858
https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/ontario-court-says-wisdom-and-efficacy-of-lockdown-rules-open-to-question-1.1542315 An Ontario court is reviewing what it says is questionable lockdown measures in Canada's largest Province that unfairly favour big corps while discouraging social distancing In Ontario during the lockdown, any business that sells essential items like food can stay open even if they aren't exclusively grocery stores. People who go to a Walmart for example may not even go to shop for groceries but rather to buy other stuff In some Provinces like Quebec, larger chains that sell essential items like food can only sell essential items and other sections of the store must be locked off to not encourage unnecessary consumer traffic and to not unfairly discriminate against retailers who can't stay open because they don't sell essential items Because large chains such as Walmart or Shoppers Drug Mart are disproportionately more likely to sell essential items than smaller stores, under the corrent law they are being unfairly favoured because they are getting to take advantage of essential items loopholes to sell everything else as well
bionic 50,111
Yeah this is wholly predictable. I've been doing what I can to support local businesses but its hard when they're not open half the time or prices are so much more expensive
chromatic puzea 10,653
i hate that shoppers drugmart's are still open for their little chip aisles and didn't like doug ford say he hates how these big corps get to stay open while small business don't like. . . miss girl you're literally the premiere do smth hard to even fathom which parts you should believe
RudraCNG 15,509
Of course it is. Look at Amazon revenues this year for example. Even if they are a little more expensive, I try to support local stores instead of buying goods to a multi billionaire brand that isn't even paying its taxes and pay sh!t to its employees. LaLuna 12,732
How shocking... NOT. My neighborhood's Giant Tiger has all these non-essential sections closed with police tape blocking them, but you still have to walk through the entire store to get to the grocery section. I have to say I'm guilty of not supporting local business as much as I could, but that's because I don't do much shopping to begin with, the only shopping I do nowadays is for groceries. PunkTheFunk 125,703
Walmart has saved my life on many occasions so I will gladly give them my coins. When I had to use the washroom was it the small businesses who let me in their doors? No, it was Walmart. When it was 10pm at night and I realized that I forgot to buy something for the office potluck the next day, was it the small businesses who were open? No, it was Walmart. It sells produce, dairy, all kinds of dry goods, plus sanitary products etc. People without a car would be totally screwed if they closed. It is very hard to find the right balance here though, I agree. I think they should just allow all retail locations to stay open with limits to the amount of people in the store. We all know the real problem is spread in private homes and gatherings, honestly

I don't know then. Keeping in mind him being the premier doesn't mean absolute power. Not everything he wants happens

I have nothing against Walmart. I don't hate on a company just because they are large like many ppl do. But I do see how this is unfair to small businesses the way the rules of the lockdown were written

They could still be open to sell the essentials specifically I think that's the point
Guest
Super unrealistic anywhere to assume that local businesses have the same type of service a company like Amazon or Walmart has. When you're not allowed to leave your house or a store is closed, it's become nearly second nature to immediately go on Amazon and order it and track it. MonsterBall13 1,223
Ya but my argument with this is what if somebody needed a pair of shoes/shirt right away and couldn’t wait for it to get shipped Walmart to the rescue I don’t believe locking down businesses was the answer though
Woolfsmck 2,763
I think the pandemic is legit... but.... Leadership is shotty ... and mandates are impacting certain segments of the economy much more than others.... Is it intentional or simply incompetency? Entertainment is slammed , which is big money corps. too ... Face mask makers and hand sanitizer makers are small private companies too , so .... ???? like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still. My words give a clue, look inside to see whats true

When you're not allowed to leave your house or a store is closed, it's become nearly second nature to immediately go on Amazon and order it and track it. This is not talking about platforms like Amazon I'm not sure where u got that from. Ordering something from Amazon is essentially risk free of Covid transmission unless the handler got it all over package and u happened to catch it that way The point of this is more the double standard with in person stores. A lot of bigger chains sell food as well like Walmart and Shoppers Drug Mart which in my Province allowed to be excused from lockdown on those grounds The point that is being made is they get to take advantage of that loophole to stay fully open and go business as usual without having to really scale back. People are not just going there for food. They go there for other stuff too and that creates unnecessary people traffic The criticism is that we should do it like other jurisdictions where during the lockdowns the exemptions from lockdown apply to essential items like groceries alone and other items cannot be sold during that time. That not only discourages ppl from staying in longer than they have to (or go into the store period of they weren't even going to buy food)... But it also doesn't create an unfair competitive advantage where big retail stores get to sell items smaller stores have to miss out on because they don't get an exemption from lockdown due to not have essential items So I see nothing wrong with this criticism. I certainly was not talking about Amazon. Places like Amazon are critical during a lockdown pandemic

The issue at hand isn't about who benefits and looses the most in general by pandemic by industry and size Of course there's big companies like airlines and movie theatre chains that are bleeding cash like no tmr while some smaller companies like the examples u listed may be benefiting big time. This is focusing on a specific double standard among retail companies specifically that doesn't make a whole lot of sense when it comes to the lockdown exemptions based on carrying essential items
