TaylorSwift 162,304
Italy has detected a patient infected with the mutated strain of coronavirus that emerged in Britain, becoming the fifth country outside the UK to report a case. The Italian patient flew from the UK to Rome in the last few days with his partner, who did not test positive, Italy's health ministry said. The pair are now isolating. So far, cases of the new variant, said to be up to 70 per cent more infectious than regular Covid, have been spotted in Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia and Belgium. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9068223/Italy-fourth-country-spot-mutated-Covid-virus-British-traveller.html https://store.taylorswift.com

weed 78,877
How does this relate to the vaccine? The vaccine was made so quickly because itâs based on previous coronaviruses, so if these are ânew strainsâ then would they require a different vaccine? Or same new still useful just not as effective?

While the new strain is worrying since It spreads faster and is becoming the dominant variant in London there's no reason to believe that the vaccine wont work on this strain. Coronavirus has mutated thousands of times the difference is that this strain has a lot more mutations than usual and there are mutations in the protein spikes which is something worth keeping an eye on since that's what the current leading vaccines target. Most likely though unless it mutates drastically, which is unlikely, there's no reason to be worried.

xoxo Craig 55,649
I think people are being too relaxed about it. While its true that viruses mutate all the time, and covid has done so many times already, this new strain is a real cause for concern. Countries would not be reacting the way they are if it was nothing to worry about. In terms of the vaccine, they HOPE that it will work the same but they have no evidence to suggest either way. They need to do more testing on this new strain to determine if the vaccine is still effective. Lastly, early data shows that the new variant stain is 70%+ more effective at transmitting itself. It's also more likely to impact younger people than it did before. They are unsure if it's more deadly yet, however, a similar strain in S.Africa has been identified with the same mutations. So it could be viewed as a sister strain, and has been shown be more deadly in younger people. Just because we have a vaccine does not mean we can take our foot off the gas. We need to be cautious, we need to take care of ourselves. Stay safe End Racism Now

The vaccine targets a specific part of the virus. Mutations don't change the entire virus. As long as the part that the vaccine is effective against (spike protein on the surface of it) hasn't mutated by much then the vaccine will still be effective, even if less than 95% of the time.
