Canada's rapid population growth came to a near halt stuck at just over 38 Million as Immigrantion targets were severely missed as a result of delays due to Covid-19. Outflows of international students returning to home Countries but barely any new ones coming also played a role

 

Canada is targeting 400,000 Immigrants annually from 2021 onward (or just over 1% of population annually) in a bid to return to former trends

 

Canada's economy has become increasingly reliant on immigration which supports an economy that has become extremely dependant on housing market, real estate financing and construction. The aging population has also so far been offset with Immigrantion rather than raising retirement age benefits as many Countries have done

But thing is, as far as I know, they're not making the process any easier for immigrants. I know two people who got accepted in PhD programs in Canada but the embassies delayed their paperwork and process so much that instead of leaving to Canada in October/November, they're leaving in January 2021. Idk what's up with that but yeah.

But yeah it's a bit of a problem. The economy has evolved to be extremely reliant on Immigrantion.

 

For example construction is 2% to 3% of economic GDP in a typical developed Nation while in Canada it's 6%

 

Canada has not made adjustments to pension benefits yet to compensate for ageing population like a lot of developed Nations have and Immigrantion has been critical to maintain labor force

 

Real estate wealth is extremely critical to Canadians networth. Average Canadian home prices are way higher than say in the US so Canadians also have large mortgages. That debt needs to be backed up by home's value to prevent underwater mortgages. Population growth is important to keep market hot. Although truthfully it's maybe a little too hot
