18 care home residents have now died from coronavirus after an infected Santa Claus came to visit in Belgium.
Sinterklaas and his helpers infected 121 residents and 36 staff at the Hemelrijck care home in Mol, Antwerp, earlier this month.

A visit from Sinterklaas to a Belgian nursing home has resulted in 118 new coronavirus infections, according to the latest figures reported by local media. 98 residents and 20 staff members are infected.

At least 75 people have been infected with coronavirus at a Belgian care home  after a visit from a man dressed as Santa Claus.
The visitor was reportedly among the first to test positive shortly after appearing at the Hemelrijck home in Mol in a bid to cheer up its 169 residents.

“It was done with the best intent, but it went wrong,” told the mayor and also alleged that care home management had initially said social distancing rules had been followed during the visit, with the man : remaining a safe distance from residents and wearing a mask at all times.

But photographs of the event showed that the visitors were wearing masks but not all residents and that Santa and his little helpers stood within two metres of the elderly.

Sinterklaas is St. Nicholas, which is Santa Claus. Santa is the nickname give to St. Nicholas (the patron saint of children), and he might not be dressed as the santa we all know... but they are essentially the same person. Or supposed to be.

Santa may be derived from Sinterklaas, but their characters and traditions are very different.
