I’m not sure how I feel about the casting, but it could be amazing. I’m definitely gonna need the trailer before I decide if I’m gonna see it or not

Disney's been racist since forever, them casting Halle as Ariel looks somehow forced.

First of all, the story of the Little Mermaid takes place somewhere near Denmark, that's why she's a redhead, so makes no sense.

Yeah you know, however it was based on a danish fairytale, I've also read that in Disney's animated movie Eric's kingdom was set somewhere near Italy, and that this was stated in a behind the scenes feauture. A lot people deny this possibility, but there are definitly some references in the movie that fit with Italy. For example the architecture is south european. A lot of the characters have a bit of a tan and dark hair. The maid's name was Carlotta which is an Italian name, and some more. I found a post on instagram in where someone explaines this possibility further:

We need more shows with black leading roles and black people in production, not forcing ideas where they don't neccessarily belong.

But what to expect from people who made Mulan a magical being.

It’s an animated movie. She’s an animated fish. ‘Not forcing ideas where they belong’ it seems and what ideas are that???

it’s BASED on a danish fairytale but it’s been long disputed that the actual movie setting is anything but. The architecture is Caribbean and some of the accents are too.

At the end of the day its not a real person. White people have literally played non-white historical characters as recent as a few years ago. Sooo.....

and yea we’d like to have BIPOC in lead roles with new characters, new stories etc. but this is a classic and many of us are elated that we’re going to see someone similar to us on the big screen no matter what y’all say.

also where there no BIPOC in Europe in that time period or something lmfaooo so weird. It’s a literal fictional kingdom under the sea. Do you know what race sea people are too? y’all are so weird istg.

Low-key entered here hoping they'd announce a cancellation... Sick of Disney ruining my childhood. Y'all just know they're gonna **** it up again.

On topic tho, we've known all this for ages, what's the big news?

Colorblind casting. Also, they’re mythological creatures so I don’t think race really matters at this point :poot:

I'm not at all objecting to Ariel being black but like... at least have her parent match??? For logical reasons? :air: they were like ok we filled the black actor quota we can't afford to make her dad black too

chaeri pls

Y'all are taking things a little too literally... Of course the original films still exist - thank God for that - I'm simply voicing my (valid) opinion about Disney completely selling out and sinking into an abyss of blandness. If you want to remake something, do it differently, but don't make it worse, that's all I'm saying. Their legacy deserves better.

It wouldn't be the first time

Ariel had a black father and multi raced sisters in the broadway show and it didn't feel "weird" or anything. Plus her mother could've been black if it matters that much.  Like belief has to be suspended the minute you go into a movie/show that centers around singing fish, A  Cecaelian witch, amongst other craziness. As long as the actor is talented, Then that's all that should matter. Same with why they chose to cast Halle. They felt these actors will be the ones to deliver their vision
