The highest point on Earth has a newly announced elevation. Mount Everest is 29,031 feet above sea level, according to survey results presented today. That is two feet higher than the altitude previously recognized by the government of Nepal.

The elevation, which was announced on December 8 in a joint statement by the Survey Department of Nepal and Chinese authorities, is the culmination of a multiyear project to definitively measure the legendary mountain. As the first serious survey of Everest in 16 years, the effort has been closely followed by the geographic community—particularly scientists analyzing how a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 affected the region.

Now that the results have been announced, representatives from both countries expressed extreme confidence in the new altitudes.

She also referenced at the JWT how she's grown to 5ft2 when on stage, or something like that :selena:

What could be the reason for this 2 feet increase? Is it somehow connected to global warming, a mountain growth spurt, more accurate technology to measure?

Tectonic plates are still moving India into the Asian continent. Everest will a long time will keep me moving

Global warming wouldn't cause a mountain to increase. I suppose marginally higher temperatures could expand space between atoms marginally but the difference would be barely measurable so definitely not 2 feet

My guess is either more accurate measurements, or it literally did increase because of movements in tectonic plates

I tried to read more of the article for more details but it doesn't let me. It keeps blocking the page with a request for you to subscribe for a monthly fee :triggered:

If i recall correctly, he himalayas grow 6.1 centimeters each year. It’s because the tectonic plates that form the mountains are colliding
