I get that people are upset with the cover because there have been much worse years with worse pandemics, wars etc. But TIME is really all about the zeitgeist and this is probably the first time in a long time that the whole world is going through something so shitty, collectively. They aren't saying this is objectively the worst year ever, they're just echoing the sentiment that seems to be present right now.

Obviously it's not as bad as war or some other historical tragedies but it is the worst year in recent memory at least

2020 is more like the worst year of the current millennium. For those of us who are fortunate to not have been deeply impacted by the virus (health wise and/job wise), it's been a mild inconvenience at most.

I have mixed feelings about this. Is it really the worst year ever? By what metric? Australians are back at partying and most Asian countries have recovered pretty well since Spring. At the same time this virus affected more people in the world than both world wars, even though more people died in the wars. But let's not forget that this decade will get worse and worse with climate change and other diseases and other challenges.
