‘The Crown’: Netflix Has “No Plans” To Add A Disclaimer

The latest fourth season of Netflix’s drama The Crown has faced some backlash in the U.K. over its depiction of the royal family and other public figures. Earlier this week, Culture secretary Oliver Dowden wrote a letter to the streamer, asking for a disclaimer to be added that makes it clear to Netflix’s 195M subscribers that the royal drama is partly a work of fiction. Netflix has declined the request.

“We have always presented The Crown as a drama – and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events,” the streamer said in a statement to Deadline. “As a result we have no plans – and see no need – to add a disclaimer.”

A disclaimer saying it’s fictional. Up to now Netflix has been pretty good at depicting the royal family accurately but this season they took a lot of liberties with the royal family that didn’t actually happen in real life. The producers bragged about the inside info & stories they acquired in the first 3 seasons & how accurate they were but this season wasn’t accurate at all.

I have mixed feelings about the entire series - some episodes are 'juicy' and interesting whilst others are boring.

I feel like this season was pretty accurate and that's why the royal family have come out against this season mainly because it depicts how poorly they treated Diana.

the way I am so hyped about this season but haven't found the time to finish it   gotta do that real quick since so many people are saying it's the best season yet... two was phenomenal!!!

My parents just finished binge watching the entire show over the last 2 weeks and I've been popping in and out, seeing bits and pieces, sometimes seeing whole episodes here and there. It's a lot more interesting than I thought it would be, bringing up a lot of stuff I knew nothing about, seeing as the only real stories that I knew about was Diana and almost nothing from before I was born. Some of the stuff covered is really wonderfully done and the acting is superb. If there's one episode out of all of them that you much watch, make it the Aberfan episode from season 3, episode 3. I'm shocked that we were never taught about this disaster in school. Obviously, Welsh children do but I don't know if the rest of Britain does and we really should, Welsh history is British history too. It was a heartbreaking story, very historically accurate and there's a reason the episode was up for so many awards. I don't think you need to be a royalist to enjoy this series, it's fascinating if nothing else.

why would you need a disclaimer that reality exists in plurality, meaning that everything is fiction? must be real hard for the royal family to see that now it's not only them who can fabricate and/or re-frame the "truth" of a narrative. they are just glamorized reality stars, tbh

everything they used about Diana they got from her own autobiography, the Royal Family simply doesn’t like that they’re finally getting heat for their treatment of others

The Crown is one of the best on Netflix and there is nothing in it that needs a disclaimer that it's a work of fiction. It never said it was entirely factual.

It's probably the best dramatic historical series right now. Each episode has a different focus but I think all stories they've shown are important. You don't have to like the royals to love the series (it's more of a critique of them), but if you don't really like politics, then it might not click.

Good for them. The Royals is trying to stop the public opinion. Besides, from this series I actually symphatize with Queen Elizabeth II who don't have much choice most of the time, it is the rest of the systems and royals members that is the problem.

Can't wait for Season 5 and 6!!
