Gagaloo911 12,959
It's what it deserves after the Brexit mess fiasco. Except for those who voted against it anyway, they didn't want that and is sad for them. To those who did vote for tho, you reap what you sow and there are consequences for your vote. No one said this is some apocalyptic starvation event. monster4life231 4,304
I'm from a working class background in the UK, and I often find it degrading the way that others speak about those from a lower-class. I can only speak from my own experience, but most of the people I know that voted for Brexit were not doing it because they're stupid or dumb, they have legitimate concerns just as anybody else does. It's this kind of ignorance towards others that has led many to feel as though they are looked down upon. Personally, I'm undecided on the EU, but I lean towards remaining. However, many of the people I know feel as though their concerns are not represented by the EU. Sone communities, such as my own, have been hit really hard with high unemployment, etc. Although, I do not prescribe these effects to the EU, as I would rather suggest that they're part of neoliberal policies. Rather than focusing upon the neoliberal capitalist economic system, many politicians were able (in my opinion) to deflect blame to others, in particular immigrants and those relying on welfare, therefore creating a divided population. People are struggling and I feel that much of the Brexit vote was a retaliation to this. The subsequent support of the Tory party by the working classes (in particular in the 2019 general election) can be attributed to the Tory party upholding the referendum result. People are complex and are motivated by a range of reasons, however I don't think it helps the general discourse to disregard some people's concerns by labelling them as "stupid" or "idiots" for voting for Brexit. There should be an open discussion on all sides as to what people's concerns are and how we can move forward in tackling them. Before people come at me by saying things like "you're a Brexiteer!" or "you're a Conservative!" I would recommend reading some of my previous comments in political posts. I'm a self-described democratic socialist that joined the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn, and I continue to advocate for democratic socialist policies within the party. I was just airing some of my concerns about how people talk about those that voted to leave the EU, as though they're all self-centred, racist and stupid people. It's wrong to make such assumptions. Also, it does not negate the negativity towards those that chose to remain, as they have also faced horrible abuse and violence which is completely unacceptable. The general insults thrown around do not help anybody, they inhibit legitimate and critical debate over the advantages and disadvantages of leaving the EU. spread peace - #MJInnocent

The reason why people voted to leave the EU was for xenophobic, racist and pure utter lies. The tories got back into power in 2010 and absolutely devastated the country with their austerity and blaming others for their reason to do it. However, working class people do not see what the tories are doing to them as it is "immigrants" coming to steal their jobs and benefits. The people who voted for Brexit had no idea how much the EU has helped the country. I am quite frankly going to see the people who voted to leave are uneducated on the subject of the EU. By means, it is not perfect but it is better than the bag of sh*t that we are going to get handed after January 1st. People just don't what is best for them. What irks me the most is more people voted for remain parties than voted for leave parties but due to FTPT system we were handed a 80 seat Boris Johnson Government and quite frankly the country is on its knees due to his incompetence. I will never accept the result of the vote because of all the lies and illegally activities that went on with the leave campaign. In the early days of the campaign I was on the fence about the EU but see the people who were advocating for Brexit just put me off. I mean, people like Bojo, Gove, Farage cannot be trusted. The people who vote to leave the EU and still advocate for it ARE STUPID because they bought the lies. Together You And I!

I can not accept that all the people that voted to leave the EU fit the characteristics which you have outlined. As I've mentioned, I'm working class and I do not support the idea that "immigrants are stealing our jobs" and I've fervently campaigned against the Tories. Most of my family are also anti-Tory, yet many voted to leave the EU. Do I think that people have voted against their own interest at times? Yes But what I mean is that people do have legitimate concerns, and I feel as though labelling them as idiots disregards these concerns, which only generates more feelings of anger. Although I can't agree with you on the way that you've labelled all Brexit voters, I certainly agree that Johnson, Gove and Farage (amongst others, mostly all of the Tory MPs and UKIP/Brexit Party politicians) are not trustworthy and do pedal xenophobic sentiments that have evidently spread across the population. spread peace - #MJInnocent

I watched the news on the lead up and post referendum and various times afterwards and the people who voted to leave were saying the same things - immigrants, NHS etc. I just don’t think the people who voted to leave the EU bought the lies that were spread. MANY MANY smart people know that Brexit will cause a mess and all the things that were part of “project fear” has came true. We will see the effects after Hogmanay - food shortages, medicine shortages and just pure chaos. The “concerns” you state are unfounded and been debunked various times. Together You And I! Ronk 14,934
What was the specific reason for those who voted for brexit because of immigration? Was it jobs, or was it the fear of letting in criminals and terrorists, or was it xenophobia and racism? I'm asking because I'm ignorant of the situation and really don't know. I live outside the space time continuum.
