GenericPhag 143
Imo it's pretty complex and no one is "wrong" or "right". Gaga is going to do what she's going to do but at the same time, she needs to commit to her ideas. Joanne is a very solid record, but she very obviously was trying to make it pop and held herself back. Chromatica is a great pop record, but the songs that really shine are the ones where she challenged herself the most. With that said, I do feel like LMs tend to change the goalpost with what is "acceptable" or the "good" direction for her. Fans have been begging her to go back to The Fame, Chromatica calls back to it, and it isn't enough. We all know that if she released an actual metal album, a bunch of fans would lose their minds since it's not "Gaga". 911 is a masterpiece, but people complained that it wasn't "Chromatica" enough. At the end of the day, I think she's a bit uncertain of her direction and artistry and having every move of hers picked apart by LMs isn't doing anything of value. Suspiria 10,683
I get what you're saying and in many ways Chromatica feels like pure fan service (and I'm very grateful for it). But IMO it's more of a thank you parting gift, than a sign that she is constrained by fans - the fact she spent the past 6 years doing stuff dance-pop Gaga fans don't like is proof she isn't. Doing things like Gagavisions and calling it the Chromatica ball, wearing massive shoes, wigs and nails, doing bigger mainstream pop collabs than she's done since Beyoncé, really makes it feel like this era was a goodbye tribute to the old Gaga before moving on. I haven't heard all of Fiona Apple's album, but from the few songs I've heard it's not really that experimental. She uses "unconventional percussion" and "found objects" which might be less common, but its still been done since like, the 1940s. It's definitely finding its way into the mainstream too with artists like Charli XCX. I'm reading her songs "subvert traditional pop structures" but this happens in literally every genre outside pop. Even in pop nowadays music very often doesn't follow traditional structures, to the point where it's considered boring for songs to have beat drops instead of a traditional chorus. I would definitely be happy for Gaga to go experimental, but personally I would like her to do it in a more forward facing way. IMO the future is definitely electronic, and I would love to hear her really play with the technology that is available to her now in 2020s, that artists before did not have access to. Same goes for her visuals. I just want her to use her resources, both in terms of money and the point we are at in time. IMO doing something like Fiona's work would be a step backwards. Messing around with traditional instruments and some random objects is something anyone can do, and people have been doing it for a century. It's time to mess around with things that weren't available before.

This ain't it, Gagz." Same thing with metal. There are lots of people screaming "Gaga should do a metal album!", but like, how many of y'all actually like metal? People are just afraid to admit they want standard pop songs from Gaga There's nothing wrong with that either. Some of y'all just need to stop compensating and start saying what you think. That's cuz most LM think Gaga is experimental. When the reality is she is srtaight pop. She have so much resources and creative control to make a different pop record, it's up to her really. the scars on my mind are on replay.
StressedOut 653
I agree with the sentiments above that Chromatica kind of came off as fan service, which I am VERY VERY HAPPY about. Going forward I would hope she wouldn't concern herself with charts/fan service, I want her to put out art/media she wants. Even if it's not dance pop. She's already snagging acting roles left and right, so it looks like that's her next step! I think gaga has the chops to put out an album as acclaimed as FTBC, she's just warming up tbh

zerojk 4,954
I kida see your point OP i made a similar thread months ago when folklore was dropped and got so much praise, but if gaga had released it, we would have meltdowns just because its not electronic pop however i think after Chromatica Gaga will be more experimental, since Chromatica felt like a response for those who were asking her to “return to her roots”

Kadikaado 4,302
With all honesty. I listened to Fetch The Bolt Cutters and even though there's some music I liked, I thik most of the album sounds like "art teacher music". Do you know when you are a child and your art teacher teaches you the basics of music? Reminded me of Björk's Dancing in the Dark. Critics love it, but to me it sounds like she recorded it in the kitchen of her house using pots wood spoons as instruments. I have a feeling of "The king is naked" with this type of music, while lots of people think it's groundbreaking it sounds very amateur to me. I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.
