TMZ: The Weeknd given ultimatum between Super Bowl and GRAMMYs

The Weeknd was faced with a tough choice -- perform the Grammys or the Super Bowl -- but hammering out a deal to do both could've cost him Grammy nominations.

Our sources say there's growing suspicion Abel's decision to perform at this year's Super Bowl cost him Grammy noms because the bitter back-and-forth talks pissed off Grammy honchos.

It's unclear why the Grammys would play such hardball in trying to exclusively book him for their airwaves. It might be fear of duplicate performances, as CBS is airing the award show AND the game one week apart in February. Still, our sources tell us Abel and co. feel the dispute might have something to do with his exclusion.

I don’t really know what to make of this cuz Gaga performed at the 2017 grammys a week after headlining the halftime show.

but then again she didn’t have any material out that year

Wrong year boo, Joanne was nominated in 2018 it wasn’t eligible in 2017. 2017 was the Adele/ 25 show when she won over Lemonade.

I see we are all of a sudden rushing to treat TMZ like the gold standard for investigative journalism the second it runs a story sympathetic to an artist we like! Confirmation bias, much?

Sounds like all they did was shoot themselves in the foot and assure even fewer people bother to tune in to the Grammys :selena: People would still watch both performances. His songs chart high and long for a reason, because people want to hear and see him. If true (it is TMZ... so Idk), what a poorly-reasoned-out decision.

Gaga did the superbowl and the grammys the same year. I don't believe that was the reason.

This! Gaga performed in the same year!

Grammys is just a total bullsh*t. I'm not even an Abel stan/fan but he deserve to have at least 3 noms for BL alone.

75% of the comments on this thread so far have been people doubting this being the real reason. So....

Yeah, besides the 'Gaga has done it' thing, the producers of the show are separate from the voting academy. Unless something really bad went down with the negotiations (which I doubt), I don't see this being the reason. If anything the Grammys should be happy to have someone fresh from a successful Super Bowl performance to bring in viewers
